I actually look behind a few times to see if he's talking to someone else, maybe one of his bodyguards or his playing partners.

For the first nine holes on opening day Saturday at Timberlake's Mirimichi golf course, I've been following the rules: Just watch and don't get too close.

Those were the conditions under which I was allowed to witness him play Mirimichi's first round of golf with his family.

They're reasonable rules. This 7:30 a.m. round was family time with his mother, stepfather and an old family friend from Union City.

Before one of his equally confused PR people can catch up to me -- calling out "Tom! Tom!" in a stage whisper -- I get close enough to Timberlake to hear his invitation:

"Come ride a hole with me."

I've met Timberlake only once before, in August 1992.

He wouldn't remember; he was 11.

The headline for that story stated: "Youngster Wins $16,000 With Talent."

The same youngster has just spent $16 million to renovate the old Big Creek Golf Course into Mirimichi, located between Memphis and Millington.

Timberlake played the front nine poorly, by his standards. (He usually shoots in the 70s.)

Timberlake doesn't really keep score. He keeps things informal, not playing out every hole, hitting mulligans, and once even putting between his legs.

Maybe his 291-yard bomb down the 10th fairway put him in a better mood.

"Days like this, you don't come out here and expect to play great," Timberlake says as he drives to his ball.

He talks about how happy Mirimichi makes him.

"Nobody's happier about this course than I am."

We stop near his ball and Paul Harless, his stepdad, says, "That was a monster drive."

"And into the wind," Timberlake adds.

"You're going to love this green," Timberlake says as he pulls out a 6-iron for a 161-yard shot.

The ball lands a foot off the left side of the green, which is dramatically long and narrow.

He chips downhill, the ball creeping 20 feet past on the fast green. He misreads the par putt -- "How does that not break?" -- and settles for one of his many bogeys on the day.

"Golfers are going to talk about these greens,'' Timberlake says, riding to the No. 11 tee. "The look and beauty and the challenge of them."

(I'm taking notes and smiling inside: His invitation is extending to two holes.)

"Think about what this course is going to be like in October" as the grasses and plants mature, he says. "And October 2012."

The 11th is a beautiful par 3, Mirimichi's signature hole.

His tee shot lands on the left side of the green, 50 feet from the hole.

"Our mission is three-tiered," he says as we ride to the green.

"Create an amazing sanctuary for the community.

"Create an eco-friendly golf course (Mirimichi is the nation's first to receive the "Audubon Classic Sanctuary" certification from Audubon International).

"And to have a public course that can be among the same names as Torrey Pines and Bethpage Black," he says, referring to the past two venues of the U.S. Open.

Timberlake doesn't make par, but he doesn't mind.

"I could stay on this green all day," he tells Harless and longtime family friend Jimmy White of Union City.

This hole, bordered by a babbling creek and pond, is his favorite.

"And that's my favorite spot on the course," Timberlake says, pointing to the No. 15 green, which is enveloped on three sides by deep woods.

After busting another straight, 270-yard drive on the par-5 12th, Timberlake remains my chauffeur.

Asked whose idea it was to buy Big Creek, he says, "My dad called me. I was on tour. He said it was for sale and what if we bought it.

"I started laughing. But he didn't laugh on the other end of the phone. Silence.

"I said, 'You're serious. I'm in. Let's do it.'"

He pulls out his fairway wood and hits to 88 yards short of the green.

"You can talk to a cut," he says of the ball flight that bends left-to-right. "But you can yell at a draw (which bends right to left for a right-hander) and it won't do what you want it to."

He backs away from his wedge shot, telling an insect, "Get off the ball, bug ... All right stay there then. You're going for a ride. Brave, isn't he?"

He strikes a solid shot, setting up a rare par.

Timberlake returns to the cart to say he loves the differences within Mirimichi.

The front nine feels "vast, wide-open," he says.

Of the more wooded back side, he says, "I love how the holes are protected by the trees."

Word of Timberlake's family outing has spread and a gallery of about 50 people is now following along.

Among them is Vallie Williams, 34, who carries a video camera in one hand and a bag with Timberlake's picture in the other.

She has been to 12 of his concerts but has never seen him in a place like this.

"I think it's wonderful. It's a different side you normally don't see," she says.

After finishing his round, Timberlake is met by some young girls who hold out Mirimichi scorecards for him to autograph. He obliges.

As he drives away, 11-year-old Skylar Cochran clutches her scorecard, simultaneously squealing and jumping.

PONTE VEDRA BEACH, Fla. -- The PGA TOUR today announced that four-time Grammy Award winning singer, songwriter, record producer and actor Justin Timberlake will become the host of the TOUR's Las Vegas event, which will be renamed the Justin Timberlake Shriners Hospitals for Children Open. Timberlake becomes the 14th celebrity in PGA TOUR history to host an event, joining the likes of Bob Hope, Frank Sinatra and Sammy Davis Jr. The agreement, among Timberlake, title sponsor Shriners Hospitals for Children and the PGA TOUR, is for five years, beginning in 2008.

The Justin Timberlake Shriners Hospitals for Children Open, part of the TOUR's Fall Series, will be played October 13-19, 2008, at TPC Summerlin over 72 holes with an official Pro-Am on Wednesday. The event will be televised on GOLF CHANNEL. As part of his involvement, Timberlake will play in the Wednesday celebrity pro-am and host a concert during tournament week.

One of those 800,000 is Katie Walker, who was treated at the Shriners Hospital in Los Angeles when she was just a year old. Her leg was amputated and she received her first of many prostheses, and physical therapists at Shriners Hospitals taught her to walk.

Walker, now 18, is a competitive golfer -- she's a freshman on the golf team at Cal State Bakersfield -- with a passion for country singing. She has recently recorded her first CD, which includes her original composition "Challenge Me," a song about how her physical challenges were the driving force to live her life to the fullest.

"As a golfer and a singer -- but more importantly, as a patient of Shriners Hospitals for Children -- I couldn't be more excited to hear that Justin Timberlake is lending his name and his support to this tournament," said Walker, who served as an ambassador at this year's Frys.com Open Benefiting Shriners Hospitals for Children. She is expected to continue in a similar role for next year's event. "His star power is going to make an already fantastic tournament even better, and I know that can only help the Shriners impact more lives like mine."

Justin leads EMA nominations

Justin Timberlake is leading the nominations for this year's MTV Europe Music Awards in Germany.

The snake-hipped singer, 26, who hosted the awards last year, has been nominated for four EMA gongs, including the Video Star Award for What Goes Around and the Headliner Award, after his massive world tour.

The ceremony, held at Munich's OlympiaHalle on November 1, boasts an all-star line-up with performances from Avril Lavigne, My Chemical Romance, Mika and the Foo Fighters, and Snoop Dogg as host.

Avril follows Justin in the nominations with nods for Solo Artist, Most Addictive Track and Album Of The Year.

She said: "I am excited to be performing at the MTV Europe Music Awards in Munich this year. It's always such a great show and I'm really looking forward to it."

LOS ANGELES (AP) - The Emmys Awards got edgy as an off-color "Saturday Night Live" video featuring Justin Timberlake and strategically placed gift boxes was honored at the creative arts ceremony.

"(Blank) in a Box," last December's music video performed by Timberlake and "SNL" cast member Andy Samberg, is about wrapping a certain part of the male anatomy and presenting it to a loved one as a holiday present.

"I think it's safe to say that when we first set out to make this song, we were all thinking 'Emmy!'" Samberg said in accepting the award Saturday for best original music and lyrics.

"The other thing we were thinking was, 'Hey! Here's this young up and comer, Justin Timberlake, who is clearly very talented and could clearly use a break,'" Samberg said. "So, Justin, if you're out there, congrats to you, kid.'"

The video, which beat out competition that included two songs from a musical edition of "Scrubs," became an Internet sensation. It garnered millions of views on YouTube and NBC's Web site, which posted an un-bleeped version.

The Creative Arts Emmys, which recognize technical and other achievements for the 2006-07 season, will air Sept. 15 on E!, the night before the Primetime Emmy Awards on Fox.

Timberlake was elsewhere Saturday: He had a concert scheduled in Tacoma, Wash. But his tour takes him to Los Angeles on Primetime Emmys night, raising the possibility he could perform "Box" at the ceremony.

As Samberg arrived at the creative arts awards, he told The Associated Press that he had yet to be asked by the TV academy to perform the song with Timberlake on the Fox broadcast - but he was willing, he said.

Justin Timberlake puts on sexy spectacle for Rose Garden crowd

Portland apparently wanted sexy back, if the crowd of mostly young women tonight at the Rose Garden could be trusted.

From the moment Justin Timberlake stepped onstage at 8:54 p.m., except for an intermission, the screaming barely paused. Through a show well-choreographed in every sense, Timberlake proved to any doubters that he's earned the musical cred he has strived for since his boy band days.

He offered a rare spectacle in a town better known for guitar-based indie rock than highly produced, commercially oriented fare: a large-scale show complete with high-energy dancers, slick stage design featuring rising and falling translucent screens and an overtly sexual charge.

Like several of his pop contemporaries, Timberlake started his climb up the fame ladder with "The Mickey Mouse Club," which carried him to the boy band 'N Sync. Though the band's five members drew their share of critical bull's-eyes, they ultimately earned kudos from some who had once dissed them.

Timberlake has been 'N Sync's graduate with the highest profile, the strongest career and, after two solo albums, the most credibility in his own right. His most recent album, last year's "FutureSex/LoveSounds," gave his boyish image a sheen of sex, a pronounced appeal to young women, going by tonight's crowd.

Clearly, Timberlake learned from his 'N Sync days. The boy band choreography laid the basis for his liquid moves, smooth enough to hold his own among the surrounding dancers, and he retains some of the glossy production aesthetic. Still, he's both smart enough and accomplished enough a musician to push past the formulaic pop that characterized the boy band boom of the '90s and early '00s.

The downside to his kind of show is the loss of spontaneity that comes with a clockwork-run production. But then, the music was only part of the point of the show. There was the entertainment value of watching attractive people put themselves through athletic moves, as well as the reflected star power of Timberlake's utter confidence on stage.

That packaging may also be part of his 'N Sync inheritance. His music might carry the illusion of intimacy, particularly the sexual kind, but it's certainly not personal. And if that's the worst to be said of him, that leaves him leagues ahead of his peers.

Pop-punk band Good Charlotte proved a good choice of opener. The quintet have a goofy, boyish charm with a bouncy sound that's heavy on the energy, low on the pensiveness - and they were quick to give Timberlake loads of props.

Their frequent mention of Timberlake's name drew more and louder cheers than Good Charlotte's performance, a fact the men seemed good-natured about. (Vocalist Joel Madden noted the large number of girls in the crowd. "You people look so good," he added.)

The band played a 42-minute set, a mix of old and new material, though most carried the same bright beat that helped launch the band in the late '90s. Their one more thoughtful song, "March On," dedicated to the troops in Iraq, sounded out of place in their otherwise almost relentlessly uptempo set.

They weren't world-changing, but really, all they had to do was hold the hordes off until JT got around to bringing sexy back. Which he most definitely did.

Timberlake To Bring His Futuresex/Lovesounds To NZ

Some might say, Mr Timberlake, that you're a cocky little bugger. What with your moon walk and hat tip stolen from Michael Jackson; your love of filming yourself at gigs; and, most chest-thumping of all, your declaration that you're bringing "sexy" back.

"Hey, well, we're putting on a show," he laughs on the phone from Los Angeles. "Honestly, it's not meant to be taken literally," he chuckles again.

And with this, Timberlake, arguably the world's biggest pop star, goes on to explain that when he sings that line he's actually singing it for you - his fans.

"A song like that is meant to get under your skin. It's meant for people to feel it when they sing it. I wanted it to become a part of their inner boast. So I'm not really boasting because it's not about me."

He says that's the reason he disguises his voice on Sexy Back, which has a gravelly and menacing tone rather than his traditional blue-eyed soul voice that has a hint of the Vienna Boys Choir.

Plus, says Timberlake, making music isn't rocket science. "I find these days that a lot of people try to write every song as an encryption you have to decipher. But that's not the case, it's just music, and trust me, I don't really believe it [Sexy Back]."

Timberlake brings his FutureSex/LoveShow tour to New Zealand next month. The two shows at Auckland's Vector Arena sold out in 10 minutes when they went on sale last month. It's his first visit here and he's happy to hear the weather should be getting warmer by then.

His latest album, FutureSex/LoveSounds, which came out last year and won album of the year at the Grammys, has sold more than 40,000 copies in New Zealand. His debut, Justified, released in 2002 while he took a break from his band 'N Sync, sold around 30,000 copies thanks to songs like the robotic pop of Rock Your Body, power ballad Cry Me A River, and the future funk of Like I Love You, featuring the stylish production of the Neptunes (who were pretty hip back then).

With worldwide album sales of more than seven million - and counting - and the past success of 'N Sync, whose second album No Strings Attached sold more than 2.4 million copies in its first week, making it the fastest selling album of all time, it's clear Timberlake is big.

He's so big his management thought it could make a few outrageous demands before this interview. His people wanted the Herald to sign a contract before I talked to him. The wording was pretty heavy.

"All material which journalist intends to use must be submitted to company, artist and Jive Records for reasonable approval," it said. "A copy of all disapproved material will be promptly destroyed by the journalist," it demanded.

We didn't sign it after politely pointing out that we had never done it for anybody else so why should Timberlake be any different?

It pays to stick to your guns and the interview went ahead with strict - verbal - instructions to talk about only music and touring.

And it turns out, as long as you refrain from asking about Britney, Cameron, Scarlett and Jessica, of course, Timberlake is a softly spoken and obliging chap.

You can appreciate why he's paranoid about interviews. Often his love life, which you have to admit is a pretty healthy one, gets far more attention than his music.

It's easy to forget that along with music-making buddies like mega-producer Timbaland, this 26-year-old is responsible for the most catchy and innovative chart-topping pop music around.

Because of this he has gained a level of credibility, among both his fans and peers, that most pop stars never get.

Nowadays he's also a movie star, with roles in gritty movies like Alpha Dog and Black Snake Moan, and he also voiced the character of Artie in Shrek the Third; he has opened a string of restaurants in the United States; he launched a clothing line two years ago; and he runs his own record label, Tennman Records.

He's come along way since his Mouseketeer days alongside Britney and Christina Aguilera in the early 90s before he formed 'N Sync.

"I think the biggest thing I learned going through those times was the business of the music business," he says.

"It's funny man, you know, it seems like five lifetimes ago, so it's all such a blur, but all in all I just feel lucky to have had the platform I have, the life I have. I guess the biggest lesson I learned was to not take anything for granted and appreciate where you are while you're there."

He had a brush with the nasty side of the music business when it was discovered 'N Sync's manager Lou Pearlman was ripping the young band off.

"I was being monetarily raped by a Svengali," is how Timberlake described the situation in an interview last year.

However, after the success of No Strings Attached he realised he could make a career out of music.

"Music has always been a big part of my life but it really hit me when that second album came out that, [I thought] 'Wow. I can really do this'. Still to this day I can't believe that this is my job. I can't think of anything else in the world I could do for a living and have this much fun so I'm just really enjoying the ride to be honest."

Despite his dabbling in acting, which he says is just a hobby, there is nothing that beats going on stage and performing live.

"It is one of the ultimate things. I don't think I've found anything else comparable to performing live - it's a pretty unique feeling to get that energy for two and a half hours from an audience. You try to create that environment and the first time you receive it, it's pretty amazing."

His show day routine is "more mellow and boring than people probably think" and he says he approaches a concert tour like an athlete since his show is two and a half hours of non-stop action. So on concert day he tries to do as little as possible and before the show he does the standard stretches and vocal warm-ups.

The tequila shots Timberlake and his dancing boys slug midway through the gig look like they help his energy levels too.

Seeing Timberlake's show, it's obvious that he's still, er, 'N Sync. But ask him the secret to a good song and he's not so sure.

"I'm not the sort of ... I don't know, Scott," he laughs. "When you go in the studio to write a song you just try not to think too much about it. At the end of the day it should just be fun. I think that if it feels that way to you and if it portrays the proper emotion then I think, mission accomplished. You don't go in there trying to make a hit song, you're just trying to make a song you like, and one that's cool and that you respond to.

"I do like to try things that I haven't done sonically, and I did obviously try to better my voice on this record. But I think no one wants to be stuck in the same box and doing the same, so I think it was important for me to try new things on this record.

"I had no idea if it would work or not," he says, "but I just hoped people would respond to it in a positive way."

Lately he's been working on a track with rapper 50 Cent for his new album, Curtis, he's also done a song with 80s stars Duran Duran, as well as his idol, Madonna.

"I remember, and this is crazy, but I remember in middle school how every girl would have the cut-off fingerless gloves, the side ponytails, the skirts and the fishnets. Every girl in my middle school wanted to be just like Madonna. So to be working with someone who's an icon is amazing."

If there's one thing Timberlake would like to be remembered for it's a long career like Madonna has had.

"I think I'd like to have one that stood the test of time. There's no knowing what will inspire us five or 10 years from now, but I just hope that I'm still that inspired then and that I still approach things the same way I do now, which is to just have fun."

It's got to be said: the hype is justified.

From the first robotic funk moments of FutureSex/LoveSounds, Justin Timberlake showed why he's outstripped his prefab boy-band roots to become a genuine superstar.

Emerging from behind giant semi-circular scrims to truly deafening screams, the slight 26-year-old commanded attention, sliding gracefully across the huge stage -- which was crawling with provocatively clad female dancers and suit-wearing male hoofers -- and proved that he's not just a radio sensation, but that he can pull off his sly, sexy R&B live.

Helped out by a seven-piece band and four backup singers, the fleet-footed former 'NSYNC member wearing a black suit, white shirt and white runners, skipped, slid, twirled, leapt and paused for the occasional crotch grap, his falsetto never sounding winded.

He paused after a giddy rendition of My Love to banter with the audience and do a shot.

"That's something I've noticed about Canadians," he said, raising his hand in the universal "drinking" motion and then asked the crowd to join him in a toast before launching into Senorita from his debut solo album, Justified.

The in-the-round setup featured a circular stage with two catwalks extending right out into the seats, and two neon-lit triangular stage extensions, around which sit the enclosed red-carpeted VIP lounges with bar stools lining the lip of the stage.

Timberlake made the most of the setup, strutting the stage with his band and playing keytar during the Sexy Ladies, running out to shake fans' hands, then sitting down at the piano for the ballad Until the End of Time.

With a show this choreographed, there's clearly not a spontaneous moment in the night, but Timberlake imbues every movement with a sense of impish joy that makes it seems as fresh as if he were doing for the first time. After an epic What Goes Around... Comes Around, he playfully took his life in his hand, prowling the narrow lip of the stage as fans grasped his pants legs while he did a version of Timbaland's Bounce -- midway through, the producer-rapper joined him onstage for Chop Me Up.

Timbaland then took over with a 15-minute DJ set as Timberlake took an intermission. He led the crowd in a singalong and call-and-response session that included snippets of Michael Jackson, Kelly Clarkson, as well as artists who have benefited from his magic touch, such as Nelly Furtado and Missy Elliott, over his trademark booming beats. The biggest cheers were reserved for Give It To Me, the track featuring Timberlake and Furtado from his new Timbaland Presents Shock Value album.

At press time, if the set list held true to prior shows, Timberlake still had a good 10 songs ahead of him, including the Britney Spears kiss-off Cry Me a River and the tune that spawned a catchphrase, SexyBack.

Timberlake's boy-band days are long behind him and his musical appeal is across the board, but you wouldn't know it from looking at the crowd at the arena, which was overwhelmingly female, many of them alarmingly young women teetering along in alarmingly high heels. The bathroom and beer lines featured vast expanses of exposed cleavage and the mix of perfumes filling the air was dizzying.

The merchandise cleverly catered to the XX set, too: hot pants with SexyBack stamped on the derriere were $50, while the boy-short underwear reading Love Stoned are a relative steal at $25. Gentlemen got their chance to be fleeced, though -- a zippered warmup jacket would set you back $100.

Maryland band Good Charlotte played a 40-minute opening set of what passes for pop-punk these days, which is to say inoffensive, catchy rock mostly culled from their most recent album, Good Morning Revival. Tattooed and guylinered lead singer Joel Madden (Nicole Richie's main squeeze) coaxed screams out the audience by flattering Winnipeg's beautiful women and offering the band's services as a replacement hockey team for the Jets. Keep Your Hands Off My Girl, March On and I Just Want to Live had good energy, but the quintet seemed dwarfed by the huge stage.

His rep has already shot down the wishful-thinking rumors that he will team up with Madonna for the show.

Justin Timberlake Brings Future Sex to Madison Square Garden: Live Report

Justin Timberlake was the toast of the town tonight in New York, and like any Southern gentleman would, he toasted back. "In the spirit of keeping it loose, New York - and because I like to drink - I'd like to share a toast." The sold out crowd raised their plastic cups and bottles of beer. "So first of all, to the greatest city in the world," said the 26 year-old, whose two nights of performances at Madison Square Garden for his FutureSex/LoveShow tour are being taped for an HBO special premiering on Labor Day at 9pm. "Kudos to HBO… They're broadcasting live to the troops. Salute our troops!" Having already glided through "FutureSex/LoveSounds" and "My Love," Justin's suit jacket was off, his sleeves rolled up. "And last but not least, I just like to drink! Here's to the Big Apple!" The crowd erupts, takes a collective swig, and Timberlake lets loose with the hit single "Senorita," from his 2002 solo debut Justified.

"Do 'Dick in a Box!'" a drunken frat boy-type accompanying his girlfriend calls out. But if he came for silly antics, the fan came to the wrong party- tonight was strictly grown and sexy.

Timberlake has got one of the tours of the year (it runs through November) and whole lot of other stuff on his plate right now-his hot new single "LoveStoned," a highly anticipated new duet with Madonna, the hip hop hit "Ayo Technology" with 50 Cent and Timbaland, his new label Tennman Records (a joint venture with Interscope) and a new restaurant opening in Manhattan. There's also those seven VMA nominations and that relationship with film hottie Jessica Biel. But he never looks like he's forcing it: he squints with his hand across his forehead as if searching for someone special in the audience, while thousands of girls scream, convinced that it's them that he's looking for. Timberlake slid through a string of hits both new and old without sounding the slightest bit winded, as effortless as a kid sliding around in his socks on a slippery floor. JT's gestures-smoothing his Mohawk, grabbing his crotch, tipping his fedora, tossing and twirling his mic-work seamlessly with his music. He popped, locked, and lept across the stage, played the guitar, piano, and keytar, flexed his falsetto, and flipped his middle finger to a handheld camcorder during a rocking, rousing rendition of "What Goes Around Comes Around." The audience held up their end of the deal, and the squealing never stopped.

After a 20 minute intermission set DJed by producer extraordinaire Timbaland, a dapper Justin returned in khaki slacks and vest, a white button-down and sneakers, a fedora, and a handkerchief tucked in his back pocket. He and his matching back-up dancers looked like a hip hop version of Newsies as they performed "Rock Your Body," "Last Night," ""Damn Girl," and "Summer Love" with choreography that was precise but loose. He dedicated the moving "Losing My Way" to "anybody who ever lost somebody they love" and beatboxed after an electrifying "Cry Me a River." "If you're freaky and you know it let me hear you make some noise!" Justin shouted as he opened the song of the moment, "LoveStoned" before sealing the deal with "SexyBack" amidst a lightning storm of laser lights. The screams were absolutely deafening when Timberlake returned for an encore. "I'm at a loss for words," Justin said, sitting at the piano. "I'm so humbled by this moment. I can't believe this is my job because this is so fucking cool!" Then he stood and clapped for the crowd, before belting out the ballad "All Over Again (Another Song)," and saying "I love you guys, thank you, that's all I've got!" during his bow. Timberlake may be all grown and sexy now, but the boy still has manners.

My review. I could say a million more things but my hand is killing me.

Thinking of ways to describe my experience at the Justin Timberlake Sexy Back Tour is not an easy task. The dude blew me away with old hits but reworked LILY. He was on fire during that song, jumping and strmming on his guitar, and the whole place rocked, as everyone jammed out.
Loved Stone one of his newer tunes had me bouning my head and body to the beat.
Another crowd pleaser was Justin's hot new single Sexy Back, which caused the entire crowd to get into it.
What Goes Around Comes Around a slower song off Future Sex/ Love Sounds slowed down the pace, but it was hot to see him working those keys oh so well.
The way he held the mic the entire concert made me wish I was that mic, as he kept moving his hands up and down.
Someone in the crowd threw or passed a skimmpy piece of underwear which Justin took into his hands, and twisted it for several minutes before saying,"You should be ashamed of yourself," followed by, "Kidding."
Justin twirled around one of the tee-shirts some fans made that were on TRL on July 31st of this year.

Listening Party

Boston didn't have many people waiting inline to score free tickets, and even had to announce it over the mall speaker to get more people.
After scoring the blue band for the people who are 18+, we headed to look around the mall, returning at around 1 something, where a line was already forming for people to be let in at 2:30. The line quickly grew, as we waited.
We walked through the lower level taking the esclators to the second floor which was off limits to anyone but the ones with bracelets.
It was a good wait, and we watched Justin's 2003 Concert on the big screens, which cut to his music inbetween, and the CD cover art.
Shortly after getting, we were given two slips one for the phone contest, and one to try and get on stage with Justin. Two fans were slected, and brought on stage before Justin came out.
He walked out in a white tee-shirt, with some kind of print acknoleded the audience, as "Pose" was being played. He greeted the audience, and girls up on stage.
A man on stage asked Justin which track he wanted to preview first, and he thought about it for a minute, before saying "My Love" which he said doesn't know why rasio has it yet. He the took a few questions, something about pizza, and a 10 year old boy asked what his fvorite sport was when he was a kid? He asked how old the boy was, and said at 10 he like basketball, but now he can't run around as much so golf is his new favorite sport.
Somewhere in here a reporter asked if he felt Nelly Fuertado was selling out by how she did this record, but Justin disagreed saying that's what artist do change their sound.
In the begining of questions Justin was told two people had birthdays and he wished them a happy birthday.
He also played What Goes Around Comes Around and Loved Stone, before telling everyone "Boston has a curfue, so I'll try to be earlier tonight." Not exact quote.

That might explain why the pop sensation returned to the TD Banknorth Garden for the second time in six months last night, admitting just before the end of his set that the sold-out crowd was one of the loudest he'd ever heard.
"And I'm not just kissing your (behind)," he promised.
The two-hour extravaganza began with all the buildup and fanfare of a space shuttle takeoff: Fog machines were in full effect, the stage was bathed in red light, JT was muttering the words "Future Sex Love Sound" from some cavern beneath the stage, and female fans were screaming maniacally in anticipation.
Clearly, greater suspense delivers greater satisfaction, as Timberlake proved with a high-energy set defined by a multitude of dancers prancing and posing around the stage, an expansive band, frequent beat-boxing interludes, and Timberlake balancing vocals, multiple instruments and extensive choreography almost effortlessly.
The 26-year-old worked in a few ballads throughout the evening, including the show closer "(Another Song) All Over Again," and "Gone," a throwback to his days with *NSYNC.
The majority of the set, however, featured pounding dance tracks, including the Neptunes-produced "Like I Love You" and the space funk of "My Love," "LoveStoned" and "Sexy Ladies."
Dim lighting, Timberlake's three days' worth of stubble and three-piece suit set helped to set the tone for an evening of sexy sophistication, while the giant round stage made viewing the star an equal-opportunity affair.
Space funk master Timbaland emerged for "Chop Me Up" and stuck around for his own DJ set/-Timberlake intermission.
He also reappeared for the pulse-pounder "SexyBack" during Round 2 of Timberlake, which also included "Rock Your Body," "Cry Me a River" and "Damn Girl," with scantily clad dancers pushing the boundaries of PG-13-friendly pop.
Opening act Good Charlotte combined elements of hip-hop, new wave and pop-punk impressively onstage.
They may not have had much in common with Timberlake's set besides black and white suits, but lead singer Joel Madden (whose girlfriend Nicole Richie was on hand) did make an astute observation after taking a look at the crowd.
"I've never seen so many girls in one place in my life," Madden said.
"It's amazing."

Paparazzi photographs of Timberlake and Madonna leaving recording studios in London have appeared in magazines all around the world.

The pair share more than a CV that includes kissing Britney Spears.

So far Madonna, Timberlake and FutureSex/LoveSounds co-producer Timbaland have written six songs for her forthcoming album.

"There's a couple of duets in there," a cagey Timberlake says of his work with the queen of pop.

Madonna offering the creative olive branch to a young performer (Timberlake is still only 26) must be like getting to meet pop's answer to Yoda (admittedly a hotter version thereof). She was topping charts when Timberlake was filling nappies.

"She's a very talented lady," Timberlake says diplomatically. "There are definitely moments when I think, wow, I'm singing with Madonna. But she's so cool. She's very clever, very innovative. I was humbled working with her. She's fun to work with and she takes advice. Plus she has an amazing mind."

Pressed, Timberlake says some of the Madonna tracks have grooves that sound like her first album, but with more advanced lyrics.

"It kind of meets in the middle between what she does and what I do. It's exactly how you want to hear Madonna right now. It doesn't sound quite like anything she's done yet it still sounds like Madonna."

MTV VMA Nominees Announced: Justin Timberlake, Beyonce Lead The Pack
Show will be broadcast live from Las Vegas on September 9.

The 2007 MTV Video Music Awards are heading to Las Vegas on September 9, and now we know just who we'll be wagering on.

Justin Timberlake and Beyoncé lead the pack of nominees for the 24th annual VMAs, each with a whopping seven nods, followed closely by Kanye West and Rihanna with five and newcomer Amy Winehouse with three.

JT's "What Goes Around ... " and B's "Irreplaceable" will face off in the Video of the Year category, alongside West's "Stronger," Rihanna's "Umbrella," Winehouse's "Rehab" and - in perhaps the biggest shock of the entire nominations field - French electro duo Justice's "D.A.N.C.E."

The awards will be coming to you live from the Palms Casino Resort in Las Vegas on September 9 at 9 p.m., with MTV News' preshow beginning at 8 p.m.

Timberlake, West, Rihanna and Winehouse will also perform at the event, along with a full house of kings and queens that includes Tmbaland, Fall Out Boy, Chris Brown, Lily Allen and the Foo Fighters performing with special guests live from the Palms Fantasy Suites. Timbaland will also be serving as the evening's musical maestro, with superstar DJ Mark Ronson on the decks - and Timbaland and Timberlake will be hosting their own fantasy suite party.

Justin will be a pretty busy guy on VMA night, because in addition to being nominated for Video of the Year and performing, he also picked up noms in a trifecta of brand new categories: Male Artist of the Year, Most Earthshattering Collaboration (for his team-up with Timbaland on "Sexyback") and Quadruple Threat of the Year, an award given to boundary-busters who excel in multiple fields (such as music, fashion, philanthropy, business, acting and dance). His videos for "What Goes Around ..." and "Sexyback" were also nominated in three professional categories, the former scoring noms for Best Director and Best Editing, the latter for Best Choreography.

Beyoncé also benefited from the addition of new categories, landing nominations for Female Artist of the Year, Earthshattering Collaboration (her hip-shaking turn with Shakira in the "Beautiful Liar" clip) and Quadruple Threat. Like Timberlake, she also dominated the professional categories, as her "Beautiful Liar" video is nominated for Best Director, Editing and Choreography.

West has to be happy with his four noms, which include Male Artist of the Year and Quadruple Threat - although if he loses to Justice in the Video of the Year category, like he did at the 2006 MTV Europe Music Awards (see "Kanye Admits To Having Had A 'Sippy Sippy' (Or Two) Before EMA Rant"), he just might spontaneously combust. Rihanna also got four nods, including Female Artist of the Year, and her "Umbrella" is nominated in another brand-new category: Monster Single of the Year.

Winehouse's three nominations make her the most prominent newcomer to the 2007 VMA party, but she's by no means the only fresh face looking to take home some hardware. The Gym Class Heroes are coming to Vegas with a pair of noms under their hoodies - for Best Group (yet another new category) and Best New Artist, where they'll go head-to-head with Winehouse, Carrie Underwood, Lily Allen and Kanye's favorite bunch of whistling Swedes, Peter Bjorn and John.

The winner of Best New Artist will be determined by the fans, who can vote for their favorites by visiting www.VMA.MTV.com

Justin Timberlake brought some Southern heat to New York City Monday night by celebrating the grand opening of his new restaurant, Southern Hospitality.
The new barbecue joint, which the singer co-owns with pals Trace Ayala and Eytan Sugarman, specializes in the food Timberlake grew up with - traditional Memphis-style cuisine such as spare ribs, homemade buttermilk biscuits and crab and corn fritters.

In fact, many of the dishes are derived from Timberlake's original family recipes - including desserts his grandmother made. "We had to negotiate on which ones she was willing to give up," said Timberlake, whose grandmother and granfather both attended the opening.

As for his favorite meal on the menu, Timberlake said he likes "fried green tomatoes and the pulled pork."

Also on hand to celebrate the opening of the Upper East Side eatery were Jay-Z, Lace Bass, Seth Green, Jamie-Lynn Sigler and the Rev. Al Sharpton.

"I'm here because there's food - and I know them," Green told PEOPLE at the event.

Asked about his own culinary skills, Green said, "I'm excellent with breakfast foods. I'm good with omelets and pancakes. I bring it home for you."

Inside, Southern Hospitality is homey, decorated with antiques from Memphis flea markets. The restaurant is not Timberlake's first: He had previously owned a chic Chinese restaurant called Chi in West Hollywood.

Talented Timberlake states his case as the new King of Pop

Justin Timberlake certainly knows how to work a crowd. Even before his entrance up through the middle of the stage, shrouded in gauzy curtains and flanked by his four gangster-and-moll style backing dancers, he's milking the 20,000 capacity audience like he's been doing it all his life. Which he has, really: ever since his first gig, aged 10, as a mousketeer on the Disney Channel, through the frizzy-haired years of boy band stardom in *NSync to now, the slim 26-year-old in the three-piece suit and trainers from Memphis, Tennessee has lived and breathed showbusiness.

He teases his fans unashamedly - stopping his first solo hit, "Like I Love You", half-way through, allowing just enough time for the odd boo to ripple through the crowd before picking it back up, at a more frenzied pace than before. Then there's the patter - "If I'm going to be away from home, there's no place I'd rather be than London" - every sentence of which is greeted with ear-splitting screams. There's a slightly odd moment when he toasts "our troops who continue to fight for our freedom". But no one really minds, they're not here to see Timberlake talk.

This is The 2007 FutureSex/LoveShow, tied to last year's concept album, FutureSex/LoveSounds, whose main concept was to "bring sexy back" with a heaving mass of testosterone-fuelled tunes produced by Timbaland, Black Eyed Peas' Will.I.Am and Rick Rubin, among others.

Timberlake performs tracks from it, along with a few favourites from his 2002 debut, Justified, on a propeller-shaped stage whose four protruding tongues allow him to get up close and personal with his fans. He's backed by a crack team of street dancers - none of whom come close to Timberlake's own effortless gliding across the stage - a pleasingly chunky band featuring no less than three drummers and four excellent backing singers.

Aside from a revolving stage, occasional projections and the odd laser beam, there's a refreshing lack of trickery. The show is really all about Timberlake, who uses the evening to showcase his myriad talents. Aside from his breath-taking dancing he sings with style, he beatboxes (on "Cry Me a River" - by far the biggest song of the night) - and he plays a bewildering array of instruments. "He'll be on the bongos next," remarked my companion, a little wearily.

Luckily for us there's an interval. Timberlake re-emerges wearing a trilby and combat trousers, but - weirdly - the same shirt.

By the time he had played "Sexy Back" you leave wondering whether this hugely talented showman really could fill the gap left by that erstwhile King of Pop, Michael Jackson. -

JT's Southeren Hospitality Extends to NY Eattery

I was wondering what happened to this place. I remember hearing about it a few months ago, and then nothing else. I can't wait to go there when it opens!

Judging by the construction workers congregated inside, Southern Hospitality, pop star Justin Timberlake's Upper East Side BBQ restaurant (1460 Second Ave.), looks like it will finally see the light of day. Originally scheduled to debut in April, the eatery is now aiming for a mid-July opening, according to its publicist. This will be the second NYC entry for Timberlake, who also co-owns Destino , the Midtown East Italian.

BBQ joints may be to Memphis (where Timberlake was born) what pizzerias are to NYC, so perhaps that's why Timberlake and company chose the somewhat daring location - just one block down from Brother Jimmy's BBQ, the popular post-collegiate watering hole that promises to "Put Some South in Yo' Mouth." But with its dark-wood setting, Southern Hospitality looks a bit fancier than its neighbor, renowned for its trailer-park-meets-frathouse decor.

The title of the track, due out later this year, may be changed to She Wants It, with Justin's most risky video to date being filmed in London this weekend.

A source said: "The track is an analogy for watching porn. The word 'technology' was put in as a way to replace what they really wanted to say - "pornography".

"It's all about being fed up with having to make do watching dirty movies and how desperate they are for stunning girls to be in front of them them doing what they do in the movies."

Sounds like an average weekend for a Premiership footballer.

Big-time LA video director JOSEPH KHAN has flown from the US to film the video this weekend.

The idea is based on Hollywood film The Matrix with all the guys - Fiddy, Justin and Timbaland - playing secret agent roles.

The source added: "The treatment for the promo has three spy characters stalking beautiful models.

"They will be racked up with hi-tech gadgets and night-vision goggles which enables them to see through the girls' clothes.

"It's a cat-and-mouse situation with car chases and gadgets galore but spying on the girls is the main theme. It will be a bit creepy and sinister.

"They are going to push the boundaries with what they can get on film."

The track will feature on 50 Cent's forthcoming album Curtis. Other stars, including rappers EMINEM, AKON and singer MARY J BLIGE will also appear on the CD, out in September.

TEEN CHOICE 2007 will celebrate the hottest teen icons who made waves this year in film, television, music, sports and fashion in a live two-hour special airing Sunday, Aug. 26 (8:00-10:00 PM ET live/PT tape-delayed) on FOX.

This year, Lily Allen, Shia LaBeouf, Sacha Baron Cohen, America Ferrera, Sanjaya and "Heroes" are among those receiving their first TEEN CHOICE nominations. Justin Timberlake, the reigning "Teen Choice" champ who has won 18 surfboards since 1999 for solo and group projects, landed four more nominations this year. In the midst of traveling around the globe promoting Shrek the Third and playing sold-out venues on his worldwide FutureSex/LoveShow tour, Justin Timberlake took time out to call EW.com from Köln, Germany to share some of the other projects he's somehow fit into his schedule. In this revealing chat, the artist talks for the first time about his sessions with Madonna, reveals the artists he's signed to his new label, and explains why he's taking time off from his own release schedule.

ENTERTAINMENT WEEKLY: You and Timbaland have been writing and producing songs for Madonna's next album. How's that been going?
JUSTIN TIMBERLAKE: The records that we've done so far are really exciting. There are some dance records, there are some mid-tempo ballads, there's all types of different stuff. But I don't want to gas it too much. People might like it or people might not. I don't want to say, like, [carnival-barker voice] ''It's going to change the world!'' You know what I mean? But we like it.

How about the songs you've recorded with Duran Duran for their new album?
It's crazy to be sitting in a room with people that you admired as such a young kid, and now they're looking to you for answers and suggestions and opinions. Literally, I'm just a fan.

Let's talk about the label you're starting, Tennman Records. Would you say this is something you've always wanted to do?
It's funny. Things that are this ambitious, it's not something where you sit around and say, ''Oh, I'd love to do that one day.'' I kind of stumbled upon it. And then when there was so much interest from the people that I admire in the business, I thought, ''Well, maybe I can do this.'' It just feels like a good time to do it. I've run the gamut on things I can do for myself [as an artist], and it seems attractive to me now to sit in the back seat.

How did you decide to sign 18-year-old Netherlands resident Esmée Denters as your first artist?
Being in the business for 10 years now, you look around and some people got it and some people don't. I saw her on YouTube, got wind of what was happening - ''Hey, there's this girl in Holland who's got a phenomenal voice.'' And the word ''phenomenal'' in front of ''voice'' doesn't come often. Usually you hear, ''She's pretty good, but there's this great song,'' which is usually a bunch of bulls---. And so I turned on YouTube and I was literally blown away - not only by her voice, but also her ear. I love the opportunity of discovering a talent that's so raw. And now I can just kind of sit back and help her mold herself into a superstar.

Have you signed any other artists?
The second act that I've signed is a good friend of mine, his name is Matt Morris, and he's actually a co-writer with me. He's kind of like Ray LaMontagne meets Elton John meets Stevie Wonder meets Rufus Wainwright. With digital downloading, now more than ever it's time for the birth of the hybrid artist. I'm anxious to create an artist that all the press has trouble labeling. To me, there's two kinds of music: There's good music and there's bad music. So what we're going to do is try to stay away from the latter. [laughs]

When have you worked with Matt in the past?
There's one song that he co-wrote with me on FutureSex/LoveSounds. It's the last song on the record. He's written songs for Christina Aguilera, he's written songs for Kelly Clarkson. He's an amazing pop songwriter. But he also has this folk side to him that fits in for his own voice, and that's how I hope to introduce him to the world. I'm actually looking forward to, after this initial press break, not talking about the label so much and just getting the music out of the artists - so people invest in the artists and not the fact that it's our label. I mean, a label's a label, but if you don't have talent, you don't have good songs, it really doesn't mean s---.

What's the timeframe for introducing these first couple of artists you've signed?
The first step with Esmée is to just get her in front of a crowd. Natasha Bedingfield is opening for me right now, but I'm going to put Esmée in front of her and let her come out and sing two or three songs. It's funny, because I get a rep for being a person that's gotten extremely lucky, and I do believe that as well. But man, I've been on stage and had bottles thrown at me. I've shown up at festivals and played and gotten booed. So I feel like it's something that everybody needs to go through. [But] I have great fans and a great crowd that comes to our show, and I think they'll be excited to hear her.

When do you think you'll have time to record some of your own new material?
Ah, man, I don't even know. That's one of those things that when it hits you, it hits you, and you jump back in. That's how I did this last [album]. You know, I don't want this to come out the wrong way at all, because I'm only 26 years old, but I've been on tour for 10 years. You know what I mean? I just feel inspired to give someone else a chance to have what I've been lucky enough to have. That's where my head is right now.

What is it with Justin Timberlake and sex? His 2006 album FutureSex/Love-Sounds, still in the UK Top 30, fair strains at the Y-fronts with priapic purpose ("I'm-a freak you right, each and every night," he warbles on Summer Love, just one of several declarations of his woodmanship). On his No 1 hit SexyBack - good heavens - Timberlake even had the temerity to berate the rest of malekind for our apparent inadequacy with the ladeez. He has the carnal appetite of a rutting, horny toad, and a line in patter to charm the birds off their bar stools. Maybe it's the pent-up frustration from the years of squiring a then-chaste Britney.

We should never, of course, confuse image with reality. "It'd be ridiculous to be unconscious of the fact that you do have a sort of a persona," Timberlake concedes. A nice massage for the ego, surely? "I'm in Catch22, because if I say 'Ah yeah, that's cool', then I look like a cocky bastard. And if I don't, then I look like a stuffy bastard." He smiles. "I guess either way round, I'm just a bastard." Still, give the boy credit for his sense of humour. Last year, on the American television show Saturday Night Live, he sent himself up in a musical number entitled +#%# in a Box (23m views on YouTube), in which he wore a Christmas package strapped to his flies, promising a doe-eyed honey "a gift real special", dare she lift the lid.

The thin, pale chap with the Action Man beard perched on the sofa opposite me doesn't look capable of mounting the stairs, let alone asserting his reputation as "the new king of sex", as the cover of Rolling Stone hailed him. The artist sometimes known as Trouser-snake ("Which is just hilarious," he says) is also in the throes of a long European tour, having jetted into London between yells of " Gute Nacht, Köln" (last night) and " Bonsoir, Lyon" (tomorrow). "It does take a lot of wind-down," he apologises, the Tennessee twang rather tired. "It took me a while to fall asleep last night."

Timberlake's lightning visit is in the name of Shrek the Third. He voices the character of Prince Arthur, or Artie, a blond medieval high-schooler whom the green ogre grooms for the throne of Far Far Away. It was another guest spot on Saturday Night Live, in 2003, that prompted all the acting offers. His jaunt over here still seems a bit beyond the call of duty, especially as the Shrek juggernaut has just enjoyed a record opening in the United States for an animated film. But Timberlake is nothing if not the ultra-professional.

His recent split with his long-term girlfriend, Cameron Diaz, who reprises Princess Fiona, must have thwarted all manner of cosy red-carpet moments. But the film was offered to him a long time ago, he explains, before he and Diaz were an official item. The break-up has afforded the tabloids no end of frothing speculation. He has moved on to the blockbuster star Jessica Biel, some claim - the pair were spotted dining out in a Manchester Nando's, of all places, with the deep-thinking Man United forward Alan Smith. But Timberlake is hardly going to spill the beans on his love life.

Alongside Shrek the Third, he can still be seen in UK cinemas in the gangland flick Alpha Dog (disturbing) and Black Snake Moan (equally disturbing, but for all the wrong reasons). They, along with the thriller Edison and the forthcoming sci-fi flick Southland Tales, were shot in 2004-05, during a hiatus after the hectic period of recording and touring for his debut solo album, Justified.

Acting can be a risky diversion for a muso - call it the Sting factor - but Timberlake seems rather adept at this thespian lark. He was excellent in Alpha Dog - as a feckless, shirtless drug lieutenant, he carried the film. "That's kind. Thank you. That means a lot," he responds, seemingly genuine. He could surely make this his full-time vocation. "Listen, I don't aspire to be a movie star - I got enough attention," he says. Why act at all, then? "Well, I always wanted to do it [in his teens, he appeared in a TV movie, Model Behavior], but I never really got the courage. I thought I wasn't going to get the opportunity to do it the way I wanted to do it."

It's down to that image thing again, apparently. "You either capitalise on it or you go against it, and I feel like I've done the latter. And in the long run, it will turn out better for me, because I'll get to do interesting parts. I don't have to be the lead; I enjoy doing a supporting role." As a creative type, he adds, you can't afford to stick in a rut. "You have to keep reinventing yourself." He sighs. "I don't want to sound like I'm jaded about the whole thing."

You could forgive him if he was. A performer since the age of 10, when he went on stage at the Grand Ole Opry, Timberlake, now 26, has pretty much spent his whole life in showbiz. Shipped off to Orlando from his home town, the Memphis suburb of Millington (though he lives principally in LA now), he became a Mouseketeer on the TV show The Mickey Mouse Club, alongside Britney Spears, Christina Aguilera and Ryan Gosling. By 14, under an ambitious mother/manager, he was a founder member of the boyband *NSync (his mum, Lynn, came up with the name, right down to the asterisk). Grammys and platinum records aside, he had, by the age of 20, lived a life - the sex, the drugs, the tight harmonies - that not all come through unscathed. "It's not the normal ascent to adulthood," he chuckles.

It's fair enough that he would have wanted to break out from the manufactured pop image (see also Robbie Williams). When the opportunity arose, he seized on some unwanted tracks that the producers the Neptunes had made for Michael Jackson, another boyband fugitive and Timberlake's biggest influence, right down to the body-popping and jaunty chapeau. While the other *Nsyncers went their own ways (Lance Bass was last seen trying to become an astronaut), Timberlake landed upright in his pristine trainers. The resultant album, Justified (2003), launched him as a solo artist, FutureSex merely confirming the liberation.

You do suspect, for all that, that there's something quite safe about Timberlake's sex. For every risqué diversion (groping Kylie's derrière at the Brits), there's his $6m deal with McDonald's; for every roguish admission (that he smoked a ton of weed while making Justified), a tidying-up exercise afterwards. "It's not like I said it like that," he protests. "I find over here [the UK], more than anything, that my words are made into completely different statements."

Timberlake is not the first rubber-legged troubadour to have issued from the city of Memphis, of course. Elvis casts a long shadow. "I found they're just starting to accept me as, you know, the younger brother," he chirrups, rather cavalier given his general circumspection. The pair may have more in common than one thinks. For, to paraphrase John Lennon, if Elvis died the day he went into the army, Timberlake, too, bottled his great rock'n'roll moment. I refer to "Nipplegate", the 2004 Super Bowl "wardrobe malfunction", when he beat an apologetic retreat, leaving Janet Jackson as hung out to dry as her sorry, star-encrusted breast. What would we have given for a conspiratorial wink to the camera?

Timberlake prefers to skip over the incident and the question of its career impact. "I've commented on it so many times, it's kinda like Groundhog Day," he mutters. "I don't feel like it was a boost or a hindrance. I didn't have anything come out after that, so I didn't benefit from it any way."Nothing will be left to chance on the current tour, which comes to the O2 arena in London on July 4. But, yes, he did have dinner with Alan Smith after taking in a match at Old Trafford in May. "If anything, I'm a Red," he admits. "Alan's a great guy. And when Becks was here, I hung out with him a few times."

In London recently, Timberlake went into the studio with Madonna. Something from those sessions may surface soon, he hopes. And beyond that? "I've never really thought that far in advance," he says. It's a remark casually at odds with his former bandmate JC Chasez's assertion: "Justin wanted world domination. He came up with a master plan."

Pop princesses, riches, a fairytale existence - Justin Timberlake had no need to rehearse for Shrek The Third. So when we went to his court, why did Live find a prince who wants to be turned into a dog - and is despairing for a happy ending?

Justin Timberlake does not look at his best. He is visibly, unashamedly hungover.

The fact that he's nearing the end of the opening leg of his epic FutureSex/LoveShow world tour can only add to his bloodless visage.

Tonight, it's the 10,000-capacity Verizon Wireless Arena in Manchester, New Hampshire.

All around the cavernous sports venue, the inhabitants of 21 luxury tour buses are playing out a familiar ritual: Preparing the contents of 23 articulated lorries for tonight's sold-out concert extravaganza.

In a quiet room tucked away off a backstage corridor, the 26-year-old pop megastar, actor and fashion hopeful sits stroking his two boxer dogs in his specially constructed sanctuary-cum-dressing-room.

It contains one giant flatscreen TV, an assortment of rugs and sofas, a bowl of throat sweets and painkillers on a table at his elbow and two huge cages for Buckley and Brennan nearby.

Brother and sister, the dogs are the stars of his own, personal show: He looks at them constantly and fondly.

"They're pretty subdued animals," he says in his mellow, high, Memphis drawl, nuzzling up to one of them. "You know," he sighs, "they really have the life. I wish I had their life. It doesn't suck."

It is hard to imagine precisely what, in the cossetted world of an internationally famous pop star, could possibly "suck"; but then I'm not Justin Timberlake, who wants for nothing except an ordinary life.

The life he has chosen is extraordinary in the truest sense. From American TV's The Mickey Mouse Club and *NSYNC, the boy band who would have the highest-ranked first-week album sales in music history, he has achieved remarkable things.

None more so than the near-impossible trick of successfully graduating from a bubblegum image to respected solo artist and beyond.

In two weeks' time, you will be hearing him in Shrek The Third, in which he stars opposite old flame Cameron Diaz.

If you miss that, you might catch one of the thrilling pop songs he churns out for his girly teen market (both his solo albums have gone multi-platinum).

Or a more grown-up edgy musical soundscape (his production work with Timbaland is genuinely innovative), or one of his inspired hook-ups for other markets (he's worked on the new albums by Rihanna and Duran Duran).

Or you might buy an item from the fashion label he has created with designer William Rast (launching in Europe soon), or see him in one of his gritty indie films (Alpha Dog, Black Snake Moan).

This CV, together with a razor-sharp distrust of the press, means that securing a chunk of his precious time requires hefty, detailed negotiation.

He's been known to keep journalists waiting for entire days for their allotted audience as he tools around in a blacked-out limo. All of which can't help but build a picture of an isolated, egomaniacal star.

But once you wriggle past all the PR hoopla and finally make your way into his dressing room, you find that Timberlake is a pretty decent bloke.

The superstar madness happens around him, not necessarily because of him. He's softly spoken, calm and apparently just as bewildered as the rest of us at the celebrity circus that attends his every move.

He's infuriatingly cagey on subjects like his love life, but is also surprisingly engaging, and pleasingly averse to soundbite vacuity.

He's also intuitive. "We did a pub crawl yesterday in Boston," he says, just as I'm dwelling on the bags beneath his eyes.

He glances at his cousin Rachael, a foxy twentysomething who is also his personal assistant, and who has just flopped down on the adjacent sofa.

"We did, what, six pubs? I rarely go out any more. It's not fun unless you're with your friends. It's just like anything.

"Last night, we started getting into this blueberry beer. It sounded disgusting, like some Willy Wonka stuff…"

Timberlake shudders. "It wasn't good to drink, either," he says with a shake of the head. Timberlake seems desperate to convince me how "normal" he is, but I ask if he really believes it himself.

He answers by telling me that a few years ago he did indeed own "eight or nine" cars, but has recently had a clear-out. "I got rid of a lot of them," he says. "It seemed ostentatious."

"I do have one indulgence, though: a Ferrari. But it's a Scaglietti 612, the most logical Ferrari you could buy.

"It actually has a back seat. Not that I put any groceries in there… I've also got a BMW that I use all the time. And a pick-up, because I like to go to Mammoth [near his Los Angeles home], to the mountains, to go snowboarding.

"I tried taking the BMW there once and I had to call out the rescue truck when we got stuck. Rachael was with me.

"That's when I said, 'You know what, we're gonna be coming here every year, so I'm getting a pick-up.' It makes sense to me. I don't need six Bentleys sitting in my garage."

What about the 400 pairs of trainers he supposedly owns? "I got rid of a lot of them, too," he claims. So how many did he keep? He thinks for a moment before deciding on the figure of 150.

Rachael shoots him a sceptical look that says, "Yeah, and the rest."

"I do have a lot," Timberlake chuckles. "It all started when I was growing up watching Michael Jordan playing basketball.

"I started collecting Nike Jordans. I still have pairs that I had when I was eight years old. Some are collectibles that will never be worn."

Does he take them out and stroke them? "Yeah, I clean them with a toothbrush… I'm kidding. I have acquired a lot on the road, and I do have friends at Nike who send me new ones when they come out.

"But you know what it is - and this is what's crazy about celebrity - I'm busting my ass to make money and now everybody wants to give me things for free. That's messed up."

Pub crawls and snowboarding with his cousin; this, it seems, is as wild as things get for Timberlake these days. But it hasn't always been this way.

Five years ago, when he was just another boy-band refugee trying to manage the tricky transition from kiddie pop to serious muso, he was reported as saying, "If I denied ever taking drugs, that would be stupid.

"Have I experimented? Sure, in the past. Right now, I'm at a place in my life where I don't need substances to stimulate my mind. But I wouldn't say drugs aren't fun. They are fun."

Not surprisingly, everyone went crazy over the quote. Did he burn his fingers? "No, not at all," he says intently. "I don't regret the things that I say."

But he says a quote last year was "distorted", which goes some way to explaining the hesitation he's displayed in the rare interviews he's granted since then.

"The one thing that really got to me was when the newspaper involved maintained I said heroin was safer than cigarettes.

"In fact, I said that I'd heard from a doctor's statement somewhere that cigarettes were more addictive than heroin - because they'd asked me if I smoked, and I said, 'No, I can't. I smoked for a role in Alpha Dog and it almost killed me.'

"I'd never smoked on a regular basis and I could identify with how much it takes over your body. So we were just talking about that.

"And the statement I made was, 'Well, you know, doctors say that nicotine is the most addictive drug there is.' But I guess that meant I said something else."

When you hear these quotes it's not a surprise to see why Timberlake is so newsworthy - doubly so when you factor in his relationships with famous women (Britney Spears, Diaz and, lately, rising starlet Jessica Biel) and the fact that newsworthy things happen around him all the time.

Take, for instance, the "wardrobe malfunction", when Timberlake accidentally exposed Janet Jackson's breast during the live broadcast of the 2004 Super Bowl.

The result of all this is that he is now very careful about what he does, and particularly what he says.

Take, for example, the delicate issue of his former girlfriend, Cameron Diaz. When I ask whether the media pressure made their relationship almost impossible, he pauses for an age before carefully venturing, "Well, when you have those two variables [he means big stars] it creates a lot of hype.

"And people love hype, but I just find that with your friends or spouse or loved one, if they look at it the same way you do, they don't buy into it, and that definitely helps."

Which obviously doesn't explain a great deal, but at least I asked.

Irony of ironies, Timberlake is appearing alongside Diaz in his biggest Hollywood outing yet, as high-school geek Artie - AKA the future King Arthur - in Shrek The Third.

He's entirely believable in the role, but close followers of his career won't be surprised at that.

He garnered rave reviews for Alpha Dog, in which he played a rather convincing tattooed drug dealer.

He followed that up with a tough and gritty supporting role alongside Samuel L Jackson and Christina Ricci (with whom he shares a difficult sex scene) in the dark Black Snake Moan.

Ricci said of her co-star, "I was nervous meeting Justin for the first time - you think if someone has that much success, and is that famous so young, the chances of him being an a**hole are pretty high.

"But we met in a hotel with the director and he was so sweet - opening doors, being respectful - that you couldn't help but like him."

Timberlake says the sex scenes were the hardest. "When doing them you're constantly thinking, 'This isn't going to look hot at all.' I'll crack a joke or something, so it's not as uncomfortable."

How would he compare that scene with Ricci and snogging Scarlett Johansson in his last pop video, What Goes Around?

"I've got to say that for the most part they are so good at what they do, they had a way of making it as comfortable as possible. And they're not all that bad to look at, either."

Which is more than you could say of Britney Spears. Timberlake has consistently declined to be drawn on the inspiration behind the song, What Goes Around, which is assumed to be about his old friend.

But given that he's brilliantly re-tooled his own career in myriad new, different directions, I wonder if, given the chance, he would help Britney's?

"I think this goes for anyone: It all starts with the songs. The truth of it is, she had catchy songs. If she had catchy songs again, I don't think anybody would be chastising her as much as they are.

"It's been this way for me as well. It's why everyone made such a big deal out of me talking about drugs - where we come from, it's the stereotype.

"You seem like you might be PG-rated forever, and that's not the case." He looks at me meaningfully. "I was never PG-rated."

He returns his gaze to Buckley and Brennan. It's two hours to showtime, so I leave him and join his paying public.

They witness a tremendous performance: Timberlake on a revolving, multi-levelled, cantilevered stage in the middle of the arena, surrounded by dancers, backing singers and a funky band of musicians.

There is no trace of hangover - indeed, he kicked things up a gear before going on stage by making his band drink a shot of tequila.

What Goes Around has the entire arena singing along. And I think Timberlake clearly loves his life. Not because it gets him cars and girls and more trainers than any man could conceivably wear in a lifetime.

But because it lets him do what he wants: Make great music, act in movies, and play top concerts - and not suck at all.

Multi-platinum four time Grammy Award-winning recording artist Justin Timberlake has launched Tennman Records, a joint venture with Interscope Records, it was announced today by Jimmy Iovine, Chairman, Interscope Geffen A&M. Mr. Timberlake will serve as Chairman and CEO of the new joint venture, which will be based in Los Angeles and will be distributed worldwide by Interscope Geffen A&M.

Ken Komisar, former Vice President of A&R, Sony BMG Music Entertainment, has been appointed President of Tennman Records. The first signings to the label will be announced in the weeks ahead.

Timberlake enjoys the acting challenge

Justin Timberlake has sold more than 13 million solo albums, won four Grammy Awards, has a hot movie career, including Shrek the Third, and could probably take his pick of the world's eligible supermodels and Hollywood beauties.

At the age of 26, it's been a nice ride so far.

He was with Britney Spears when she had hair, was romantically linked to actresses Alyssa Milano, Scarlett Johansson and Jenna Dewan and just wrapped up a four-year relationship with Cameron Diaz.

If Timberlake was taller, his life may not have turned out this way.

"I wanted to be a basketball player when I was a kid," Timberlake, musing about what may have been, told AAP during an interview in Los Angeles recently.

"That was all I cared about."

His hero was Magic Johnson and he once read how the Los Angeles Laker legend shot 100 free throws a day at practice, so each day a young, skinny Timberlake would walk to his local basketball court in his hometown of Millington, Tennessee and shoot 100 free throws.

"It rained a lot in Tennessee," Timberlake recalled.

"I remember standing in the rain trying to do 100 free throws."

During these early years, Timberlake was also dabbling in music, with his mother, Lynn, paying for singing lessons.

The rainy hours on the basketball court did not help his singing.

"I'd go to voice lessons on the weekend and I'd have a cold," he said.

"My mum said, 'Look we have to figure this out because I'm not going to pay for you to have voice lessons if you're going to waste it'."

Timberlake, at the innocent age of 10, found himself at the crossroads of a career path, but the choice was not a difficult one.

"Of course, I'm not 7ft 2," Timberlake, still no shrimp at 6ft 1 (1.85cm), laughed.

When he was 11 his singing landed him on TV talent show Star Search and a year later he joined Spears and another future pop princess, Christina Aguilera, on The Mickey Mouse Club TV show.

When the show ended in 1995, Timberlake was catapulted to worldwide fame when he formed boy band 'NSYNC with another Mickey Mouse Club castoff, JC Chasez, and three other teenagers, Chris Kirkpatrick, Joey Fatone and Lance Bass.

"Touring the world at 15 years old, that's a history lesson right there," a wide-eyed Timberlake recalled.

"When you're 15 years old you don't understand fear as much. But it was amazing.

"I remember once when we did three shows in three different countries in one day. We were touring for a year and a half so I got to see some great sights, but it was tough going."

Acting became a natural transition for Timberlake, who showed during guest starring appearances on US sketch comedy TV show Saturday Night Live that he had acting chops.

"We all saw him on Saturday Night Live about three and a half years ago," Jeffrey Katzenberg, one of the heads of DreamWorks, the Hollywood studio behind the Shrek franchise, said.

"Given how great the regular SNL cast is, it's unusual for a guest to go on the show and knock it out of the park.

"All of us were just blown away by how funny he was and what a great sense of timing he has so we approached him to do a voice."

Feature length animated films are notoriously tedious to make for the director and technical staff, with Shrek the Third taking almost four years.

Since signing up to voice a young, nerdy King Arthur in Shrek 3, Timberlake shot four other feature films - Edison with Morgan Freeman, Alpha Dog with Bruce Willis, Southland Tales with Sarah Michelle Gellar and Black Snake Moan with Samuel L Jackson.

"He's like the old school triple threat," Mike Myers, the voice of green ogre Shrek, said, referring to Timberlake's ability to act, sing and dance.

Timberlake is enjoying the new artistic challenge.

He also enjoys not being judged about the characters he plays, unlike music, where his lyrics are analysed for hints about his private life.

"With acting, you get to build a character but you don't have to be responsible for it, you know?" he explains.

"I write lyrics and everyone takes them so literally.

"It's funny to me, because I write songs a lot of the time that have nothing to do with me.

"It could be based on a friend's experience or based on a fantasy that I create in my mind.

"I lock myself in the studio and just let my mind wander. Then it goes out into the world and people go 'Oh that's who he is'.

"Then with actors, so many of them put themselves into the role and people go 'Oh that was brilliant'.

"People think it's as if they were someone else, but sometimes I think, 'No they were just being themselves'."

Shrek the Third broke box office records in North America when it opened on May 18, collecting a mammoth debut weekend take of $US122 million ($A148 million) - the highest for an animated film and the third biggest of all time.

Timberlake's character in Shrek 3, "Artie", is a nerdy school kid who Shrek hopes will become the saviour of the Far, Far Away kingdom.

Often actors describe the difficulties of voicing an animated film, but Timberlake has a different take.

"It's literally the easiest work I've ever done," Timberlake says.

"No make-up, lights or cameras and a script to read from, it was a breeze.

"They do a storyboard, they go over the scene with you and then you do it four or five times," Timberlake, detailing the process for voice talent, continued.

"Then you hit certain lines in different ways so the director has certain options.

"You do five or six sessions which go for about four hours each and that's it.

"The challenging part is you're in a booth by yourself.

"Or just you and the director (Chris Miller).

"It's not like acting where you have someone to feed off."

Timberlake said the other tough part was finding the time to fit the voice recording sessions into his music schedule, although DreamWorks was so keen to have the teen idol in Shrek the Third they followed him.

"I'm sure I was a headache for Katzenberg because I went on a concert tour," Timberlake said.

"I did sessions in LA, Minnesota, Florida and New York."

Timberlake also did not mind playing the young nerdy version of King Arthur.

"He's sort of the opposite of a hero when you meet him in the movie," Timberlake said.

"That's the beauty of Shrek. They take medieval mythology and turn it on its head.

"When I first got the offer we started talking about who he would be.

"Is he a punk? Is he a skater punk?

"As it turned out, it felt more heart warming that he was just a regular kid, but he wasn't the coolest kid in school.

"We all felt like kids could relate more to that.

"I feel that when you're an adolescent in school, nobody is really cool.

"Either your limbs are too long, your skin is bad, or you know, kids make fun of kids in school."

Timberlake is thankful he quit attending a regular high school when 'NSYNC scored its record deal when he was 15.

He maintained his studies by completing a home school program by the University of Nebraska that allowed him to complete his education in a condensed amount of time.

"High school is kind of weird," he said.

"I don't think I missed out on anything."

College, however, he believes would have been interesting.

"I would have just chased women," Timberlake cheekily admits.

"I wouldn't have made it through college to be honest with you."

Shrek the Third opens in Australia on June 7.

DreamWorks Animation SKG's "Shrek the Third" shattered the opening weekend record for an animated film, bringing in $122 million, exceeding expectations and chalking up the third-biggest opening of all time.

The film, which stole the No. 1 spot from "Spider-Man 3," was expected to gross between $80 million and $110 million and some analysts had not expected the film to top the $108 million opening of "Shrek 2," which had been biggest first weekend for an animated film in box office history.

The record-breaking results also mark the best opening of all time for a distributor Paramount Pictures film.

Timberlake Love Stoned for Manchester

POP superstar Justin Timberlake has loved his time in Greater Manchester so much, he's decided to shoot upcoming music videos here.

Both Justin and his r 'n' b producer cohort Timbaland have been filming at top-secret shoots in Salford in the past week.

Chart-topping solo star Justin recorded the promotional video for his latest single, Love Stoned, at Web Studios in Little Hulton on Thursday.

And last night the SexyBack singer was due at a car park off Chapel Street, Salford, to appear in Timbaland's video for his new single The Way I Are.

The results will be seen by the stars' fans across the world - putting Salford squarely in a global spotlight.

In true superstar style, Justin, or JT as he likes to be known, pulled out all the stops at Web Studios for his video.

Massive

He used a massive 600kilowatts of lighting power- the most the studios have ever used for a single shoot.

Meanwhile music video director Shane Brake jetted into Manchester from Los Angeles yesterday for the Timbaland video, which shot throughout the night in Salford and Manchester, and said both music stars have loved their time in the region.

He said: "Timbaland wanted an edgy rock `n' roll style video for this single so we chose a parking garage in Salford because of the interesting architecture and archways.

"Timbaland then wanted to end the video by driving around Manchester in a black cab.

"I think that Timbaland really sort of likes the vibe of Manchester, and it suited him to shoot his video while he was here with Justin on tour in the UK."

Shane said that Timbaland had asked a "few professional football players" down to the shoot to star in the video as well, although remained tight-lipped about their identities.

Both Timberlake and Timbaland have been enjoying their time in Manchester - so much so they decided to extend their stay in the city after Justin's two M.E.N. Arena gigs on Monday and Tuesday of this week. Justin, who has been staying at Salford's five-star Lowry Hotel, has been taking advantage of Manchester's wealth of restaurants.

He has been dining out with his new girlfriend, Hollywood star Jessica Biel, at eateries including Nandos for Portuguese, Shimla Pinks for Indian and El Rincon for Spanish tapas in the past week.

THERE'S no fear of any expense being spared at a Justin Timberlake gig.

The global megastar is pretty sure he knows how to wow an audience - and that's with a feast for the eyes quite unlike any ever seen at the M.E.N. Arena before it.

For one thing, the stage was completely in the round, a huge medallion-like split-level cross clasping the centre of the Arena, with fans packed to the rafters all the way around.

It meant more fans than usual could get up close and personal with JT as he lunged to the four corners and beyond during the first half's blisteringly high energy set.

"This is my 50th show of this tour," Justin yelps. "So I'm a little tired".

Not that you'd know it as he gyrates with consummate ease to his hits on this, his FutureSex/LoveShow tour.

In Justin we have a perfomer so totally in control of his stage that he's almost like a robot of pop. He's the natural successor to Michael Jackson - nabbing a few of his moves along the way.

Every jerk and jiggle is so effortless, and his army of dancers mirror him at every turn in what is a truly awesome production.

He gets stuck into business from the off - firing off his debut solo hit Like I Love You second on the set. He does his best to treat all four corners of the arena to his loveliness, but as is always the downside with this sort of staging, you can at times get to feel a little left out.

Beamed

Vast voiles descended on to the stage for large parts of the show with videos of JT beamed onto them, but I couldn't help but feel at times there was so much going on on stage, you struggled to see where the man of the moment was himself.

You certainly get your money's worth with Justin though.

An hour-long-set is followed by a brief DJ interlude by JT's producer cohort Timbaland, before he bounced back on stage for another 90-minute set. Things are a little more laid back for the second half, with Justin showing off his musical skills with an intimate acoustic set on piano and guitar of his former N*Sync hits.

Things get back into full speed with Cry Me A River, and then a synthesiser solo by JT leads into a pumping SexyBack for the conclusion.

He returns for one encore with an emotional thanks to all his fans.

"I want you to know I wake up every morning and think, this is just so much fun. I want each and every one of you to know how grateful I am. don't want to get too cheesy, but I am so cheesy."

What a refreshing confession from such a massive star.

WESTWOOD, California - Normally, this is the part of the article that gives a brief explanation of the star you're reading about, summarizing his career and pop-culture significance. Instead, all you need are two words: Justin Timberlake.

Following years of success in other realms, the superstar is now entering one of the few kingdoms he has left to conquer: cartoons. On the verge of his "Shrek the Third" debut as the would-be King Arthur (see " 'Shrek The Third' Details! Nerdy Justin, Killer Princesses, Ogre Babies And More"), he spoke candidly with MTV about his love of Scooby-Doo, the wedgies he got in school and rumored duets with 50 Cent, Madonna and ... Paris Hilton?

MTV: So Justin, tell us about Artie, the possible future king of Far, Far Away.

Justin Timberlake: Well, he wears tights and he carriers a sword - but not well. He's sort of a loser, sort of a nerd, and he's told at the beginning of the film that he is the heir to the throne; he is the boy who would become king. And you get to learn a lot about Artie, and how his parents ... left him, so he kind of feels like he doesn't have what it takes to be a king. He develops a relationship with Shrek, and there you have it.

MTV: When Shrek and the gang find young Artie, even the nerds give him wedgies! Did you ever go through a period like that?

Timberlake: I've definitely felt what it feels to get a wedgie before - that's not ideal. [He grins.] ... We've all stumbled and fallen, and sometimes things don't work out how we plan them. [This movie is] really about picking yourself up and trying again.

MTV: How big a deal is it to you to be in a cartoon? Were you the type of kid who'd wake up early on Saturday mornings to watch them?

Timberlake: Oh yeah. I liked cartoons when I was a kid. I used to try to mimic all the voices from cartoons.

MTV: Do you do anybody well?

Timberlake: [He laughs uneasily.] I'm going to get embarrassed now. I can do a Tasmanian Devil. [He makes the sound of the Looney Tunes character.] That's a pretty good Tasmanian Devil, right?

MTV: Yeah!

Timberlake: And then there's Scooby-Doo. [He makes Scooby noises.] And then there's Shaggy: [In a spot-on voice,] "Hey Scoob!" And, of course, there's the Road Runner - "Beep, beep!"

MTV: You're good! ... If you could be the real voice of any classic cartoon character, who would you want to be?

Timberlake: I'm King Arthur, dude. I don't know how you top that.

MTV: You had a huge premiere in L.A. for "Shrek the Third," definitely the biggest of your movies so far. What was that like?

Timberlake: It's cool. It's all right. But it ain't like the MTV awards!

MTV: After all the records you've sold and the tours and everything, does something like that even impress you anymore?

Timberlake: The thing that impresses me is not the actual premiere, but when you drive around town, there is not a billboard that I've seen yet that doesn't have something about Shrek on it. It's the subliminal [messages] that DreamWorks puts out in the airwaves.

MTV: The filmmakers said they cast you based on your "Saturday Night Live" hosting gigs. What do you think they saw in those sketches?

Timberlake: Maybe that I was willing to do almost anything? [He laughs.] I don't know. [DreamWorks Animation SKG CEO] Jeffrey [Katzenberg] pulled me aside one time - I had done a song for him on a different animated film - and he said, "I really like your voice for animation. I saw you on 'SNL,' I have this character in mind. But I don't want to tell you anything; I'll tell you later." That was it - and then a year later, he was like, "We want you to be in the third installment of "Shrek," and I was like, "Find something bigger, call me later." [He grins.] No, I immediately said yes.

MTV: The last movie we saw you in was "Black Snake Moan," slightly different than this one.

Timberlake: [He laughs.] Yeah, I'd say that's fair.

MTV: Why'd you want to mix it up? Do one for the kids?

Timberlake: It doesn't get any better in the animated world than "Shrek." MTV: What else is going on for you, music- or movie-wise?

Timberlake: I just flew in from Glasgow. [I'll be] on tour in Europe and the U.K. ... until the end of September, when we come back to America.

MTV: And you're working with Madonna?

Timberlake: We did work in the studio together, we came up with some really cool stuff. I don't know what else to tell you except that you'll hear it soon.

MTV: What's the name of the song?

Timberlake: I don't want to tell you that, because she'll either kill me or she'll have me kill you. And I think we have enough celebrities going to jail. [He laughs.]

MTV: And on the flipside, you're also doing something with 50 Cent?

Timberlake: Yes, I did a song with 50 as well, Timbaland and I. We call it "AYO Technology," and it's really cool because it's a bounce record, it's kind of got the same tempo as "My Love," so to hear 50 rapping on a track like that is really different for him. I'm a fan, man. I'm just working with people I'm a fan of.

MTV: Did 50 bring out the hardest Justin yet?

Timberlake: We met somewhere in the middle. [He laughs.] It was somewhere like a bulletproof designer necktie.

MTV: There's also a rumor out there that you're going to do a duet with Paris Hilton. Is that true?

Timberlake: [Making a face.] I haven't heard that one.

MTV: Your collaborators are all over the map. Anybody else?

Timberlake: I wrote a song for Rihanna ... I just wrote and produced a song for Reba McEntire for her new record.

MTV: So is that, like, country?

Timberlake: It's not "like country" - it is country. I'm from Tennessee, so I'm making my grandfather very proud by working with someone like Reba McEntire.

MTV: What's the name of that song?

HBO Brings Sexy Concert This Spetember

HBO will produce and air a Justin Timberlake show -- its first concert in four years -- and release the concert on DVD at a later date.

Show will be taped at Madison Square Garden on Aug. 16 and air Sept. 3. Concert is part of the former 'N Sync member's "FutureSex/LoveShow" tour, but the particular date was added at the behest of the pay net. HBO will tape a second show as backup.

Marty Callner, who has worked on concerts ranging from the Rolling Stones to Garth Brooks for HBO, will produce and direct.

The last HBO concert was a Rolling Stones event in 2003 and since then many in the TV biz have all but given up on the music special. NBC garnered mediocre ratings last year for concert specials from Madonna and Tony Bennett.

"We do these differently from the networks," Nancy Geller, senior veep of HBO Entertainment, said. "When we do a concert, it's a promotion, a big event."

The selection of Timberlake for this concert reflects HBO's interest in attracting younger auds, which topper Chris Albrecht has said is a priority for the pay net. Timberlake also appeared in an HBO concert special when he was in 'N Sync.

Timberlake has drawn strong critical and commercial response for his album "FutureSex/LoveSounds," which came out last fall. Album has sold more than 6 million copies worldwide.

Net says that it could air another event in the next year or two but that it isn't expecting a wholesale plunge back into the biz.

"This was an unusually long hiatus for us," Geller said. "I believe in the concert. But I don't believe we should do it just for the sake of doing it."

AS the summer blockbusters battle it out for the box office crown, the latest entry from the most popular series of animated films ever warns us it ain't over 'til it's ogre. "Shrek the Third" finds its sometimes-jolly green hero (Mike Myers) struggling with responsibilities - both royal and familial. The usual cast of swamp dwellers and fairy-tale stalwarts is back, including Cameron Diaz (Fiona), Julie Andrews (Queen Lillian), Eddie Murphy (Donkey) and Antonio Banderas (Puss in Boots). Myers, Diaz and Andrews, looking startlingly human in person, were joined at the Four Seasons Hotel in Beverly Hills recently by "Shrek" rookies Amy Poehler (Snow White) and Justin Timberlake (Artie).

You were saying how little you got to see one another during the voice work process ...

Cameron Diaz: This is where we actually get to work with each other.

Mike Myers: I actually stalked everybody here. So I saw a lot of them, but they didn't know.

Amy Poehler: I did always feel like I was being watched.

Did you get much room to play with the script?

Julie Andrews: They give you leeway. I'm sure you [Myers] and Eddie and everybody embroidered a bit; I embroidered the tiniest bit, but I don't have the biggest thing to do.

Diaz: [Mock bitterly] I've never had any freedom in the process, absolutely none. They're like, "Stick. To. It."

Poehler: No way! Do you go into Dialogue Jail?

Diaz: They're like, "What are you doing?" [Diaz laughs and the jig is up.] I get to say "Shrek" a lot. [She and Timberlake launch into the Fiona variations of "Shrek!"]

Myers: Surely there's a "Fiona" bank somewhere, where you can just go, "Give me a 27": "Fi … o … na!"

Justin Timberlake: For "Shrek VII," you won't even have to show up. I did some ad-libbing that, you know …

Diaz: Got cut?

Timberlake: Yeah, it definitely got cut, story of my life.

Myers: [whispers] Which one does he play?

[Whispers] Artie.

Myers: [loudly] Artie! Yeah, you were great.

Timberlake: Thank you. Naturally.

Would you like to take this opportunity to slag your absent cast mates?

Timberlake: Nnnoooo …

Myers: I would like to come back as Antonio Banderas in my next life. He makes anything interesting. He's like [sultry Banderas voice], "Mike, yesterday … I had two pieces of bread … and there was cheese in the middle … I think they call it a 'sandwich.' " [Myers drops his chin in his open palms adoringly] "You're dreamy."

Poehler: Antonio Banderas smells good too.

How much of yourselves do you think got into the characters?

Poehler: Not very much of mine. My character is very bossy and persnickety and kind of a little Type A. I hope I'm not that Type A. But these water bottles are kind of off … [rearranges bottles on the table]

Andrews: [to Myers] Where you're lucky is you've got that wonderful accent …

Myers: Well, thank you. I feel that ogres are working class, and I find the Scottish accent is working class. A lot of this is kind of about class.

Andrews: And being happy with who you are. It's about being comfortable in your own skin and also being compassionate toward others.

Timberlake: To me, the third one is even a little more edgy than the first two in regards to the adult humor. It really touches on all levels.

Myers: That's Jeffrey [Katzenberg of DreamWorks]. Jeffrey wants it to be better every time. The story's better and the animation, like hair and fire - you want to give a round of applause to the hair.

Andrews: The other thing is facial expressions. The quality of color and clarity …

Diaz: But keeping it in the realm of an animated film rather than all of a sudden you're feeling like you're watching something live-action with animation in it. It's still in that realm of make-believe.

I think kids will grow up with these movies and show them to their kids. Were there movies your parents showed you that stuck with you?

Diaz: "Animal House."

Andrews: "Bambi" for me.

Poehler: I was very intimidated to play Snow White because I loved Snow White in every incarnation when I was growing up.

Timberlake: Biggest one, for sure, "Sound of Music." We watched that movie with my parents and my grandparents and my aunts and uncles. It was like a holiday film.

Myers: "Pink Panther" for me. My dad was a huge Peter Sellers fan. If you're in for two minutes, you're in for two hours at my house. And it was always a nice truce. Because my dad was from Liverpool - he didn't have a bad temper, but he was like a working-class guy - he just laughed like a drain all the way through it.

Andrews: We speak Pink Panther-speak [with her husband, Blake Edwards, director of the Sellers movies]. You know the ultimate Clouseau? "What time do you have?" [answering abruptly, in Clouseau's tortured French accent] "Yes, I know that, I know that. You fool."

Do you think being in a "Shrek" movie gives you a certain kind of "cred"?

Andrews: I've got grandkids. As they say in Variety, I "rate tall." I really do. "Granny's in 'Shrek.' "

Poehler: It was amazing, speaking as someone who's a freshman in the college of "Shrek." I was so pleased to be a part of something that will last forever and ever.

Diaz: [Audiences] really invest in it. They just love this film. I love it when parents are always, "This is Fiona." And kids look at me like [makes a face of total awe].

Andrews: And don't think they're not going to be impressed by the messages.

I wonder if they might in the future slip in other issues - curbing dragon emissions ...

Andrews: Oh, that's a wonderful idea!

Diaz: That's something I've been on Jeffrey's ear about, that the swamp possibly could be in danger.

Andrews: Why not? What better way to get a message across than with something that's so funny? It's the thing to do.

Diaz: Well, hopefully, there'll be a planet in four years.

Myers: You know, Jeffrey's bought a planet somewhere. I'm staying real close to Jeffrey, man. I wanna be on that rocket.

SexyBack to laid-back: Justin Timberlake is the voice behind the king as Artie in Shrek the Third, opening May 18. After his high-profile romances and hit CDs, Timberlake is happy to stand behind the animated character.

At a time when everybody wants to be Justin Timberlake, he just wants to be anybody else.

From the music he's writing for other recording artists to his new focus on acting, the pop-R&B singer/songwriter is trying on other voices, other personalities and, in the case of the computer-animated Shrek the Third, a different body entirely.

"I've had a good share of the spotlight for a while. I don't feel like I need too much of it right now," Timberlake says, sitting on a hotel balcony in Los Angeles, where hummingbirds hover over a scarlet bougainvillea garden. It's a serene spot in the heart of the city.

When talking about himself, his career and his high-profile romances, Timberlake, 26, can be prickly and tense, particularly over such topics as this year's hair-chopping/rehab fiasco of ex-girlfriend Britney Spears or Shrek the Third teaming him with his other famous ex, Cameron Diaz.

Timberlake's demeanor comes more into alignment with the calm surroundings when he talks about writing for other singers.

He co-wrote Okay and Get Out for Macy Gray's latest album, Big, crafted Rehab for Rihanna's Good Girl Gone Bad, which arrives in June, and collaborated on a country tune, The Only Promise That Remains, for Reba McEntire's duets collection in the fall. Writing in their voices liberated something in himself.

"I want to write country music, because that's where I grew up - Tennessee. Soul music … I want to be involved in hip-hop. And sometimes I feel the only way to really express all those different sides, even just for myself, is through different people."

In movies, Timberlake has worked consistently to vandalize the image of clean-cut precision he spent years establishing in music.

In last year's crime tragedy Alpha Dog, he was a dim-bulb street thug who helps kidnap a boy to reclaim a drug debt, and in this year's Black Snake Moan, he played a panic-attack-prone soldier whose woman is pathologically unable to be faithful to him.

These side projects playing dopes and losers come at a time when Timberlake is practically the definition of en vogue, from the ubiquitous radio play of SexyBack and What Goes Around to the two Grammys he won in February for the album FutureSex/LoveSounds.

He's on magazine covers, shaping fashion with his blend of prepster hip-hop style, and is expanding his fan base to more sophisticated listeners at the same time he's being splashed with green slime on the Nickelodeon Kids' Choice Awards.

But for now, Timberlake says, he's feeling a lack of inspiration for his own songwriting. "To write for myself, I definitely have to recharge my battery. I can't just pump out 20 more songs and expect them all to be What Goes Around. I'm going to be on tour all the way into the fall.

"So it's been nice to crawl into my little hole on the tour bus and just gig," he says. "And I'd like to do a lot more films."

Starting small, then 'Shrek'

As brash as his film choices are, the movies have not been box-office successes. He learned to start small with colorful supporting roles after taking on too much as a crusading reporter in 2005's Edison. The movie went straight to video.

Shrek the Third, which opens May 18, will attach a sure-fire blockbuster to his filmography.

"The small pictures he did weren't major hits, but that hasn't hurt him because he didn't get bad reviews for them," says James Robert Parish, author of Hollywood Songsters, about musicians who become actors. Timberlake eventually could succeed where others, such as Madonna, Mariah Carey or even Spears, have failed, thanks to - of all things - his boy-band experience, Parish says.

"When a diva is doing a stage performance, they are in control, and the focal is on them. When they share scenes, few can interact and volley back and forth. He came out of a group, and they learned how to do a performance, to make a little production out of each song. That gives him some of the acting chops he needs."

Timberlake's role in Shrek the Third is a young King Arthur (known to his classmates as "Artie"), a luckless outcast who is picked on even by the geeks. Shrek (Mike Myers) and Donkey (Eddie Murphy) venture to his medieval fairy-tale high school to recruit him as heir to the crown in Far, Far Away, which is the villain-besieged hometown of Princess Fiona (Diaz).

"Artie's sort of a nerd," Timberlake says. "He is told his whole life that he's a loser, so he doesn't believe in himself, doesn't believe he can be the king. He's got to get confidence. He's not cool, you know?"

Timberlake says he relates to the geek, which sounds unlikely coming from Mr. I'm-Bringing-Sexy-Back.

"I have my moments," he insists. "We can all relate to adolescence, when nobody's cool. I used to get picked on all the time. I had terrible acne, weird hair. My arms were too long."

OK. But America watched him grow up, starting on The Mickey Mouse Club in the early 1990s. Then in the late '90s came the boy-band 'N Sync.

Timberlake's awkward stage, he says, conveniently took place during the few years when legions of fans weren't looking.

"People get images in their mind, and they think that's what somebody is," he says. "I went to school up until high school, I didn't have a normal life, but up until that point … hey, I was just a kid in school. We can all relate to that."

Of his ex in 'Shrek'

Timberlake hates talking about his personal life. But because he dated Diaz and she is such an integral part of the Shrek franchise, the fact that they're in the same movie - if only as animated voices - is bound to get the attention of moviegoers.

"I don't say anything about that," Timberlake says. His face tenses. A silence passes. "I'm tired of people waiting for me to say something. Like I'm going to say something bad, or something hopeful, or say something in this direction or that direction."

He points out that actors who do cartoon voices record alone, and the dialogue exchanges are pieced together later. And their animated alter egos don't even meet onscreen until the end of the movie.

Still, when a major singer comes in to work on a movie franchise launched by his girlfriend, some element of the personal relationship is bound to be an influence.

Diaz, who earns a reported $10 million-plus for the Shrek films, said in a 2005 interview, "It's pretty much like hitting the lottery." So did she come home and say: "You've got to get into Shrek. It's a gold mine"?

"You're funny," he says, sounding anything but amused. Then the smile he's trying to hold back comes out.

It was DreamWorks' Jeffrey Katzenberg who recruited him for Shrek the Third after catching his first appearance as host of Saturday Night Live in 2003.

But Timberlake acknowledges the obvious: Part of the appeal was to work on a project involving his girlfriend.

"The fact that she's in it is still exciting to me. She's an amazing woman and an amazing actress, and everybody in the film is so good at these characters. I hold a huge amount of respect for everyone in the film, including her."

Even so, Katzenberg says, he felt compelled to get Diaz's blessing. "Out of courtesy, I said to Cameron, 'You know, this is something we're considering doing. I like the guy's work a lot. On the other hand, I don't want to mix things up here. Life is already confusing enough for all of us,' " he says. "She was completely supportive: 'If that's something you want to do, then great. Obviously I'm a fan and admirer, too.' "

Though their romantic relationship has ended, the two are still friendly. Timberlake says they're not mortal enemies.

He wishes Britney well

He also has positive things to say about Spears, whose public meltdown - shaving her head in the window of a beauty shop and a stint in rehabilitation - has been inescapable.

"Everybody is rooting for her, and that's a good thing. I'm on that bandwagon, too. I don't want to see anybody unhappy. You can call me a hippie," he says.

It goes back to perceptions.

"People take photos in their mind of how people are, and that's their image. But people are more complex than that. There's a lot more, I'm sure, going on for (Spears) than is being alluded to. But to me, if you're a recording artist, you make a great record, and people want to hear it. That's plain and simple. All of this hoopla that everybody creates - you make a great record, or you do a great film, and everybody kind of shuts up about it."

Does his aversion to discussing these matters influence his songwriting? The 2002 hit Cry Me a River widely is interpreted as mocking Spears, even featuring a look-alike actress in the video.

"That song was what it was, and I just put it out there," he says, neither confirming nor denying the popular interpretation.

But he says reality is not a prerequisite in music any more than it is in movies.

"I write about what I know, but I also write about things that are just fantasies in my head. I don't really think I brought sexy back. It just seemed like something catchy to say. I don't really think of myself that way. It's just fun. It's like acting, because you create a character in your mind, and you run with it."

In his quest to become a movie star, how does he feel about the possibility of seeing his life onscreen, à la Ray or Walk the Line?

Timberlake laughs again. "That'd be a terrible movie."

Where are the new global superstars? The record industry that promoted and sustained acts such as Michael Jackson, Stevie Wonder and Prince doesn’t exist any more. And which of the younger generation of performers has got that kind of talent to spare? Stand up Justin Timberlake. Or perhaps “rise up” would be a more appropriate injunction, given the number of times that he and his amazing troupe of singers, dancers and musicians rose up from beneath the floor of the Hallam arena stage.

It was the opening night of the British leg of Timberlake’s Futuresex/Loveshow tour, and the 26-year-old singer from Memphis, Tennessee, paused between songs to recall that it was at this same Sheffield venue “on May 5, 2003”, that he played his first show as a solo act, during a hiatus from his career in the boyband ’N Sync.

He has sold 13 million albums since then, but didn’t dwell on the subject. Indeed, he hardly stopped moving at all during an astonishingly busy and ambitious show that stretched well beyond two hours. Set in the round, the stage was designed like a giant propeller. The hub, which was encased at times in a diaphanous scrim, was just one area of activity. Simultaneously, all sorts of cameos took place on the four “blades” that stretched out almost to each of the four sides of the arena floor. By this method, the sense of long-distance alienation that this sort of show usually engenders was ingeniously short-circuited. No matter where you were in the venue, there was always something going on at close quarters. And such was the energy and industry of Timberlake’s performance, it never seemed long before the man himself was but a few metres away.

There was far too much going on for any one person to take in at a given moment. Lasers glimmered, images and artwork flashed across the scrims, dancers ducked and dived through trap doors, escarpments of musical equipment glided across the floor. It was as if the feverish jump-cutting techniques of modern video editing had been transferred to the concert stage. The variety and speed of the action was confusing initially, but always exhilarating. Timberlake led the formation dance moves with military precision during the song Futuresex/Lovesound, played a white guitar during Like I Love You, switched to keyboards for My Love and, of course, sang in a voice that combined a soulful tenor with an occasionally piercing falsetto – all of it accomplished faultlessly.

While some of the set pieces were precise to the point of being pneumatic, there were moments of comparative tenderness and spontaneity. And if there was still a slight dearth of the instantly recognisable hits that most stars of this stature can call on, well, Timberlake is still only on his second album.

But after a rousing support set from Timbaland, the producer and rapper, which was shrewdly embedded in the show where there might otherwise have been an intermission, Timberlake headed for the home straight with a triumphant string of favourites that included Summer Love, Cry Me A River and Sexyback, before bringing down the curtain on a spectacle that has raised the bar for arena-rock production.

It's appropriate that an ex-member of the Mickey Mouse Club would finally voice an animated feature -- even if it's for Dreamworks, rather than Disney.

As Justin Timberlake tells it, his role of Artie in Shrek The Third came to him by way of a short, bespectacled, flesh-and-blood animated character named Jeffrey Katzenberg.

"I'd just worked on the soundtrack of Dreamworks' Shark Tale," the SexyBack singer told Sun Media in an exclusive Canadian interview, "and (Dreamworks co-founder) Jeffrey Katzenberg sat me down and said I have an idea for you. I think you'd be great for a part in the new Shrek film.

"He said we have a character we're bringing up called Artie, who is a young King Arthur, and we want you to play him. All of a sudden you become a 10-year-old and it's, like, (adopts a high voice) 'Okay.' "

And what about reports that then-girlfriend Cameron Diaz (once again the voice of Princess Fiona) campaigned for Timberlake to get the job?

"Uh, I'm not gonna be answering any questions about that."

Fair enough. We'll get to the also-relevant Britney question in a second.

In Shrek The Third, our big green hero (Mike Myers) finds himself reluctantly in line for the throne when his father-in-law, King Harold (John Cleese), falls ill. When he hears word of a legitimate claimant named Artie, he sets forth with Donkey and Puss 'n' Boots (Eddie Murphy and Antonio Banderas) to find him. Meanwhile, Princess Fiona and a posse of princesses go to war against Prince Charming (Rupert Everett), who stages a coup.

"I would describe Artie as kind of a high school nerd, not the coolest guy," Timberlake said. "But he is, by the bloodline, the heir to the throne."

And though he says he knows pretty much everybody in the cast personally, Timberlake didn't meet a single one while working on Shrek The Third. "I did the work almost a year and a half ago. You're there (recording) by yourself, and you just kind of trust that what you're saying is going to be countered properly by what the other characters are saying.

"I just saw a working version of the film. It's great, man. It follows along with the other Shreks so well. It introduced more characters. It's equally as funny. It's crazy, I don't know how they do it. I brought some of my friends to the screening and we all agreed it hits all the bases ... parents, kids.

"And it has a great message. The message of Shrek is being comfortable in your own skin."

It's suggested to Timberlake that people didn't necessarily take him seriously when he quit 'NSYNC for a solo career, and likewise didn't expect much of him as an actor. And yet he sells millions of records and has garnered positive reviews for his work in the movies Black Snake Moan and Alphadog.

Is it preferable to work as an underdog? (He likes this question).

"I've never thought about that, but I think there is. There's something about people not seeing you coming, for sure. The most you can hope for is to involve yourself in good projects and good work. Acting is always something I wanted to build. I'd be lying if I said it wasn't a conscious decision to do films that were smaller and more indie. They've been smaller films where I didn't fell like I had a lot of responsibility. I felt like maybe I could come in and take people by surprise a little bit."

"It's been great for me. I'm getting phonec alls for sure I might not have gotten before."

The only trouble is, Timberlake admits he's not much of a multitasker, so his movie career is on the sidelines for a while.

"I'm kind of a one-at-a-time career artist. So I don't have anything in the can or pre-producing or anything. Other than promoting Shrek, I'm on tour for... well, the rest of my life, I think," he says with a laugh. He's been on the road with hip-hop artist Timbaland, "and we're going to Europe in the summer and we'll be there until at least the fall."

Of course, Timbaland has told the press he has talked with Timberlake about having fresh-out-of-rehab Britney Spears join them on tour, as a "solid" aimed at getting her career back on track. Is this true?

"Nah, I don't wanna comment on that."

MAY 3 is a huge day for Scots. No not the election - it's the first day of Justin Timberlake's three-day stint in Glasgow. The hunky singer plays the city's SECC on Thursday, Friday and Saturday, as part of his FutureSex/LoveShow Tour.

He's also in cinemas in Alpha Dog, which was released last week, and will appear in Black Snake Moan next month and Shrek the Third in June.

But the bona fide superstar admits that, at school, he wasn't the golden boy he is now.

Preparing for his Scots gigs, he revealed: "I didn't enjoy school that much. I was a good student but I was one of the weirdos, because I could sing and dance.

"I would say I was kind of awkward in school. It's funny the things that get you picked on as a kid. I was picked on for my hair, my skin, my voice.

"I was weird because I could sing. Then I got jumped when I was 13. I was beaten up for being white.

"I grew up in Memphis, Tennessee, and it happened so fast. I got beaten up and had a big lump on my head and a black eye.

"I want to say they broke a couple of my ribs because I remember, for six to eight weeks thinking, it's just a bruise but I think my ribs were broken. For a while, it changed me. It was hard to believe that my head could be any larger but yes ... it makes you stronger."

Justin added: "The hard part was trying to understand why it happened and then you get to a point where you have to let go and say, Okay, I'm not going to understand this because that's not who I am. I don't believe like that. I don't invest in life like that, so yeah, at the end of it - when we come into the light - into the other side, it makes you stronger.

"It makes you a stronger person."

Maybe that's why Justin, 26, despite his fame and his ability to snag the world's sexiest women, from Britney Spears to his last girlfriend Cameron Diaz, isn't disliked by guys. They want to be his pals, as much as his female fans want to be his next girlfriend.

But ask him why he thinks he's so popular and he grimaces.

"I don't think I am that popular," said Justin.

"I make fun of myself, that has something to do with it. You show up at a venue, you make jokes about yourself. Maybe it's because I don't take myself that seriously.

"Everything I do, I do full hearted. I am very serious about what I do. And it's important for you to know your venue."

An only child, his mum Lynn Harless seems more like a best friend, as she had him when she was 20.

His dad, who she calls the "sperm donor", was Randy Timberlake, who played bass and sang the high harmonies in a bluegrass band with Lynn's brother.

But Justin was raised by Lynn's husband of more than 20 years, Paul Harless, a banker she married when the singer was five.

Justin, who has two half-brothers through his biological dad's remarriage and a half-sister who died shortly after birth in 1997, admitted: "I do miss not having any siblings. My assistant is my cousin Rachel. We are kind of like brother and sister.

"But I have to believe my independent nature comes from me being a single child."

His uncle first spotted his talent singing a harmony to songs on the radio when he was two.

At 10, he went to Orlando, Florida, as part of the Mickey Mouse Club where he met future girlfriend Britney Spears, as well as Christina Aguilera.

At 14, he'd signed his first record contract for boyband 'NSYNC.

Justin said: "I was always the one who wanted voice lessons. I remember the day my mom said she would pay for me to have it. But she said, 'don't mess around with it, you have to be serious about it'.

"That was my best lesson. I was eight years old. My mom is just wonderful. She's amazing. She gave up a lot for me to have this. She travelled across the world with me for a year and a half. That has to put a strain on a relationship.

"What's so crazy about her, from the time I was a little boy, she always treated me like I was her friend. She is one of the most encouraging people I know."

Lynn was with him earlier this month when he was mobbed by young fans as he played at Carnoustie Golf Links.

There were false reports the exclusive Muirfield Golf Course stopped Lynn playing on the course.

In fact, it was his publicist who was not allowed to walk around the course with them. Justin admits Lynn keeps him grounded and has been there for him since his relationship with Cameron Diaz ended in January, after almost four years.

Now he shares his life with his two boxer dogs, Buckley and Brennan.

And he's keeping any questions about the split with the actress as light as possible.

So how does he find being single?

He said: "The advantages are that you don't get in as many arguments and the disadvantage is that you are talking to yourself."

Despite the fact he is at the top of his game as a musician, with two UK number one albums, Justified in 2002 and last year's FutureSex/LoveSounds, Justin still feels insecure.

He shrugged: "I am expected to be number one all the time.

"You are expected to make hits. But I am at a place where I am really enjoying my career.

"I can take risks now and that's okay. I don't feel I need to prove anything anymore right now.

"Sometimes I feel like a monkey in a zoo and other times I feel like the most normal guy in the world."

One thing a very open Justin won't talk about is childhood sweetheart Britney's meltdown. When asked about people going off the rails, he said: "I'll say two things. One, I can't comment on anyone that you might be talking about, who seems like they're going off the rails because - just like you don't know the whole story, I don't know the whole story. So that's kind of like, hey, make a comment on the war.

"I don't know. I'm not over there. I don't know what it's like to have people shooting across my head every day.

"Those people are the bravest people in the world to me, that's all I can say about it."

Having reached the top of the music game, Justin is now going for the A list Hollywood prize, too.

He admits as a kid he "constantly fantasised" about becoming an actor and reckons, so far, his acting is all about crying.

Justin laughed: "I'm a good cry baby. All I do in Black Snake Moan is cry.

"I cried in Alpha Dog and I cry in Shrek.

"What the hell. I just cry in every movie I'm in. That's crazy."

In Shrek the Third, he plays Fiona's young cousin Arthur (Artie).

Justin said: "It was fun being a teenager again. It was fun to make jokes about it.

"It wasn't fun when I was doing it in my life but it was fun to make jokes about it."

Justin had a tough childhood, a dream teenage time of fame and riches and, in his 20s, achieved more than most achieve in a lifetime.

Next, he'll be working with Madonna and doing more acting - so, four years off 30, has he get any goals left to reach?

"I don't know," he admitted. "Thirty has never seemed like a crazy landmark to me. Fifty seems like a crazy landmark to me - probably because I just realised that I'm halfway there.

"Halfway to 50. I know it sounds so jaded and ridiculous but when you guys turned 25 or 26 did you say, 'I'm halfway to 50?'

"I'm hoping I'm 50 times better when I'm 50."

Justin Timberlake was today gearing up for a second sell-out show in Belfast after a spectacular start to his UK and European tour at the Odyssey Arena.

And if the Memphis-born megastar was hoping for greater audience interaction on his FutureSex/LoveSound tour, he certainly got it last night - though more, perhaps, than he bargained for.

Up to 40 lucky fans managed to secure exclusive seating at a private bar area incorporated into the stage - the SexyBack Dance Club - which meant they could watch Timberlake strut his stuff from very close quarters.

On several occasions, the SexyBack star came right down to the bar area to shake hands with his screaming fans. Unfortunately, two male members of the SexyBack Dance Club took their devotion too far and ran across the stage as Timberlake was performing his final song.

The former NSYNC frontman, who only spotted one of the fearless fans, laughed it off, telling the crowd: "Give it up to Ireland's biggest gumbie who just ran across the stage there. Well done buddy."

The incident, however, didn't spoil the night for Timberlake, who told the Belfast crowd that he couldn't think of anywhere better to open the UK/European leg of his current tour. He last played here in 2003 and his performance last night was slicker and sexier than before. From the moment the show kicked off with FutureSex/LoveSound, the title track of his latest album, the crowd showed their appreciation with deafening screams, much to Timberlake's amusement.

The fans sang along as he showed off his famous dance moves to tracks such as Like I Love You, Sexy Lady, Rock Your Body and My Love.

Dressed in a black suit, white shirt and white trainers, Timberlake proved why he is continuously voted one of the sexiest men on the planet.

But last night he also showed why he deserves the King of Pop title. His vocals were amazing, from the fast, raunchy SexyBack to the Britney Spears-inspired ballad Cry Me A River.

At one stage of the show, knocking back tequila, Timberlake toasted the audience.

"Here's a toast to the lovely, lovely Irish folks," he said.

"And to the first night of my tour and the first of two nights here in lovely Belfast. And what better excuse to have a drink."

Halfway through the show Timberlake was joined by close friend and producer Timbaland for a number of tracks.

He ended the show with a message to his fans, thanking them for their ongoing support.

Separating the man from the boy

JUSTIN TIMBERLAKE is throwing up in the toilet. He's kicking seven bells out of his best buddy. He's smacking an old guy round the head and spewing racist slurs. He's pointing a loaded pistol at his best girl. Now he's sweating as he owns up to crippling anxiety attacks. Now he's about to puke again. Now he's sobbing.

It isn't in just his chart-topping, arena-filling music career that Timberlake is showing his range. The 26-year-old has a clutch of small film roles under his belt - he's a tattooed gang member in this month's indie film Alpha Dog, and voices King Arthur in the upcoming Shrek The Third. Most impressively, in next month's Black Snake Moan, the over-achieving boy-man plays Ronnie, a National Guardsman from the Deep South about to ship out to Iraq or Afghanistan. He's leaving behind his girlfriend Rae (Christina Ricci) - the first scene in the film is one of hot'n'heavy farewell sex.

Timberlake, a Memphis boy like Black Snake Moan director Craig Brewer, says he loved how the script "took chances", which is certainly one way to describe this all-het-up melodrama. Tennessee Williams by way of Quentin Tarantino, you might say. "I'm reading about these characters and I'm thinking to myself: 'Where in the world do these people come from?'" recalls Timberlake of his first look at the script. "[But] as the movie progresses... you start to say to yourself: 'Oh, I've been there before. I know someone who's been there before.' I wanted to find places where it was strong for Ronnie in the midst of all that weakness; find those places where he fought it instead of giving in to it."

Playing a sensitive boy from Tennessee is no big stretch for Timberlake, yet he more than holds his own amid the pop-eyed, scenery-chewing extravagance of Ricci and Samuel L Jackson. But it's not the first time he's entered the mindset of a young soldier. He collaborated with Will.I.Am of Black Eyed Peas - for whom Justin 'Zelig' Timberlake wrote the hook to the global hit 'Where Is The Love?' (it came to him while he was in the bathroom doing a pee, he tells me with a grin) - on a song, 'Loose Ends', for an album by Sergio Mendes. Will.I.Am told Timberlake the embryonic number "sounded conscious". Timberlake duly came up with a lyric about a soldier's family left at home after he's sent to war.

Recently, at the invitation of the Walter Reed Army Medical Centre in Washington DC, Timberlake spent a day at the facility, the main treatment centre for injured veterans. "Kids, 21, 22-year-olds," he says quietly. "The majority had [been caught] in IED [Improvised Explosive Device] blasts - homemade bombs. Crazy." When a patient asked Timberlake why he'd bothered to come, he replied: "Why not? I wanted to come here and say thank you."

There was one young soldier from Montana who made an impact on Timberlake. He had been recuperating for four months and had refused all visitors, including his governor and senator. But he asked to see Timberlake, much to the surprise of the hospital authorities. "I just wish the politicians would let us fight the war," he said to Timberlake. "It's so cool that you came here, man, because we feel that we get stereotyped from people in Hollywood, so we stereotype you. So for you to come here and talk to me..."

Does Timberlake think the troops should be brought home? "It's hard not to feel that way," he replies. "You're kinda like at this point: 'What are we doing over there?' And you can't get it from the news, 'cause it's the version they want you to see. Fox News! I'm sorry but Fox News is @+%@.

"It's just a tabloid world!" he sighs, ultra-wary - courtesy of his status as the man who went out with Britney Spears and Cameron Diaz - of being drawn into that arena.

"So you can't watch the news and depend on them for anything. It's hard to make an accurate assessment... You have to have all the facts. And I don't know that any of us have all the facts. But it's hard to look at it and say: 'THIS SEEMS LOGICAL! LET'S LEAVE 'EM OVER THERE!'''

I meet Justin Timberlake in Manchester, New Hampshire. The North American leg of his FutureSex/LoveShow tour is almost done; next stop, the world, and the remainder of the 102 extravagant concerts that will keep him on the road until autumn. The album he's promoting, last year's future-pop masterpiece FutureSex/LoveSounds, has already sold 5.8 million copies (2002's Justified, his first solo album after leaving *NSync, sold 7.6 million). The Verizon Wireless Arena before showtime is a hum of activity. Support act Pink is doing her sound check. Tour personnel, all 180 of them, bustle about their business or eat dinner courtesy of the top-notch catering. Half-naked dancers scoff scallops; burly roadies get stuck into ribs. Stuck over the corridors are posters reminding everyone that straight after the show they have a six-hour, 349-mile drive to their next show in Philadelphia.

I ask how best friend Trace Ayala - the childhood buddy with whom Timberlake is working on a fashion line - would describe him. Lounging in his dressing room, Timberlake strokes one of his two boxer dogs as he thinks. The sexiest man in pop - recently seen giving Scarlett Johansson a good tonguing in the video for his single 'What Goes Around' - is dressed in battered jeans and a favourite green tracksuit top.

"Trace would probably describe me as a perfectionist," he says after some consideration. "He'd probably describe me as very anal. Not an !#+$%#$! Just very anal! You know, Trace and I are like brothers. Do you have a friend like that? They're just completely silent and you know everything they're thinking? That's what he is - he's like a brother to me. So he'd probably describe me as always being about details."

He's relaxed and shows no sign of nerves at the thought of wowing 10,000 screaming fans in an hour or so. Having been performing since his early teens, he's an entertainment pro. Yet he's noticeably pained and stuttering when he senses discussion edging towards his private life.

He'd much rather talk about the artists he loves - notably Donny Hathaway, Jeff Buckley and Elliot Smith - even as he shivers at the realisation that they all died young, in tragic circumstances. About how his half-brother Jonathan, 13, is a bit of a Mini-Me, extremely musical and curious. "We both got it from our father" - in his youth, dad was a bluegrass musician. And about how growing up in Memphis - a crucible, a crossroads, of music - has helped make him a pop-slash-R&B-slash-everything crossover sensation.

"It's so funny: even people from New York or Los Angeles, even Chicago, anywhere north of where I grew up, they just don't get it. I had that problem - well, it wasn't a problem, but I got that label on my first record - 'Oh, he's doing black music.' I'm like, you guys just don't understand where I come from. Where I grew up there's two kinds of music - there's good music and there's bad music. To be from a city where Dr Martin Luther King was assassinated, [and] in the South there was so much racial tension and there still is... But the equal and opposite reaction of that is in the music. Even back in the Seventies, look at Stax - that was white and black people coming together to just make good music."

A short while later, laidback Timberlake has transformed himself. Standing in the raised centre of an elaborate stage placed in the middle of the arena floor, he's flanked by 21 dancers, backing vocalists and musicians, deafened by the screams of the crowd. Over the next two hours he plays a variety of instruments and dances, sings and whips up a storm. It's a proper showbiz spectacular, entirely orchestrated by Timberlake. Little wonder Hollywood holds no fear.

"I'd like to do a comedy," he had said earlier of his ongoing film ambitions. "But it has to be perfect. Even comedies, at the end of the day they have something of substance to involve the plot. I'd like to work with Will Smith on something in the comedy genre. I think it would be funny if we were biological brothers. Let's kick that idea around Hollywood and see if anybody bites!"

I see him briefly after the show when he pops into the production office. Someone's left a gift, a guitar from Elvis Presley's bandmate Scotty Moore. Timberlake, another Memphis boy made good, is chuffed beyond belief.

But he was bummed by the show, he says. The sound mix of the myriad instruments and computers that fed into his ears via tiny headphones was ropey. It was down to the venue and the equipment - which is ironic, he chuckles, as we were in a venue named after a telecoms company. It wasn't down to the mix. It couldn't have been. Perfectionist jack-of-all trades Justin Timberlake had done the mix himself.

Justin Timberlake fans... or parents of Justin Timberlake fans... will be pleased to know that a second Winnipeg show has been announced for the MTS Centre.

Timberlake's 2007 Future/Sex/Love Show comes to Winnipeg on Saturday, August 25th.

15,000 tickets went on sale Saturday morning at 10 o'clock.

Six minutes later, they were gone.

That surpasses the mark set in 2005 when Hilary Duff tickets were gobbled up in just eight minutes.

Due to the huge demand for Timberlake tickets, a second show will take place on Sunday, August 26th, and tickets are on sale now.

A RESOLUTION to honor and commend Justin Timberlake on his exemplary musical career and his meritorious service to the State of Tennessee.

WHEREAS, it is fitting that the members of this General Assembly should salute those citizens who through their extraordinary efforts have distinguished themselves as entertainers of whom we can all be proud and whose music has become the voice of America; and

WHEREAS, Tennessee is the home of American music; be it Country Music or the Delta Blues, the song of the common man can be heard in the valleys of the Smokies, across the green hills of Middle Tennessee, and on the banks of the mighty Mississippi River; and

WHEREAS, Tennessee has been the birthplace of a host of truly legendary musicians, songwriters and singers like Chet Atkins, Aretha Franklin, Dolly Parton, and Tina Turner, who have won international acclaim and national accolades; and

WHEREAS, another native son of Tennessee has hit the top of the charts and has gained a tremendous fan following that spans the globe: Mr. Justin Timberlake of Shelby County, Tennessee; and

WHEREAS, Justin Randall Timberlake was born in Memphis, Tennessee, on January 31, 1981, the son of Randall Timberlake and Lynn Bomar Timberlake Harless, and was raised in the Shelby County community of Millington; and

WHEREAS, showcasing his talents at a tender age, young Justin would first garner national attention as a contestant on the television show Star Search, performing country songs as "Justin Randall" before gaining a real taste of fame as a member of The Mickey Mouse Club television program in 1993; and

WHEREAS, winning the heart of many a young fan with his dance moves and stunning vocal abilities, Justin performed alongside future pop superstars Britney Spears and Christina Aguilera and future bandmate JC Chasez before the show ended in 1995; and

WHEREAS, without missing a beat, Justin Timberlake quickly gained international musical stardom as the lead singer of all-boy band 'N Sync, rocking the US music charts with such hits as "I Want You Back" and "Bye Bye Bye"; and

WHEREAS, since going solo in 2002, Justin Timberlake has become an international music icon, winning accolades and awards around the globe and compiling hit after hit on the music charts; and

WHEREAS, Mr. Timberlake's latest album release, FutureSex/LoveSounds, has produced three Number One singles, "SexyBack," "My Love," and "What Goes Around..," while racking up worldwide sales to date of over five million copies; and

WHEREAS, recognized for his tremendous artistic talent by his fans and his peers, Mr. Timberlake has sold over seven million copies of his debut solo album "Justified" worldwide, winning Best Album, Best Pop, and Best Male awards at the 2003 MTV Europe Music Awards, the International Dance Music Award for the track "Rock Your Body," the Radio Music Award for Artist of the Year - Top 40 Radio, and MTV Video Music Awards for Best Pop Video, Best Male Video, and Best Dance Video; and

WHEREAS, Mr. Timberlake's international awards include a 2007 Brit Award as the Best International Male Solo Artist, two 2004 Brit Awards for the Best International Album and Best International Male Artist, the 2004 and 2007 NRJ Radio Awards for Best International Male Artist, and two 2006 MTV Europe Music Awards for Best Male and Best Pop; and

WHEREAS, the pinnacle achievement of any American musical artist, Justin Timberlake has received four Grammy Awards, claiming the award for Best Pop Vocal Album for "Justified" and Best Male Pop Vocal Performance for "Cry Me A River" in 2004 and the Best Rap/Song Collaboration for "My Love" with T.I. and the Best Dance Recordings for "SexyBack" with Timbaland in 2007; and

WHEREAS, a true entertainer, Mr. Timberlake has expanded onto the silver screen and stars in the recently released major motion picture Black Snake Moan and is currently finishing a nationally sold-out tour, the FutureSex/LoveShow; and

WHEREAS, this General Assembly finds it appropriate to pause in its deliberations to acknowledge and applaud such a remarkable musical talent and a great Tennessean; now, therefore,

BE IT RESOLVED BY THE SENATE OF THE ONE HUNDRED FIFTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF TENNESSEE, THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES CONCURRING, that we hereby honor and commend Mr. Justin Timberlake on his highly successful music career and for his meritorious service to the State of Tennessee and extend to him our best wishes for every future success.
